He was the best player of his time and liied from 1726-1795. He was born in France but lived part of his life in England. He totally dominated the chess world at that time in spite of being involved in composing music his main profession. He was ahead of his time and greatly superior to the chess players of his time. He realized even then the importance of good opening and pawn play. He once won a match against one of England's best players and even let the player have white and draws counted as a win for the Englishman! He was a singer in an important choir from 6 until his voice changed at age 14 and from then he composed music. Some of his compositions are even performed today. He wrote a book which was widely published and considered a very good chess book. He wrote some on rook and pawn endings which is still accepted theory today. It has been said that he was the best player in the world for 50 years of his life because even in his late 60s he was playing outstanding chess.

Could he have been born in 1995 he would probably be a great chess player today. He would have access to more books and computer help. It is obvious he had the natural ability. Because of the lack of competition and him being ahead of his time most of the top ten greatest players lists don't have him mentioned. But if he had born in 1995 as I mentioned then there is a good chance that 100 years from now he would be included on every list then.
