Humans are probably uneasy enough buying Michael Vick human jerseys, especially in Philadelphia, but a Michael Vick dog jersey is something else altogether.
The Michael Vick dog jersey is custom made, so it will technically be the sellers who are creating it. Nevertheless, NFL.com is giving fans the option to fill out a form for a custom-made dog jersey, and to request that Michael Vick's name and number be put on the back.
After that, the Michael Vick dog jersey will cost $39.99 - and cost more than that, in the eyes of many Vick enemies. NFL dog jerseys are just a novelty, and something that is mostly of interest to the really die-hard NFL fans and dog lovers. But with Michael Vick's name now an option to be put on a dog jersey, it becomes something else.
The NFL website is more eager to let fans create a Michael Vick dog jersey than many retail stores are to sell Michael Vick human jerseys. Some Philadelphia sporting goods stores are still reluctant to put out Vick Eagles jerseys, and are still waiting to see if the Eagles fans' objections to Vick die down after a while.
The NFL probably picked the right time to introduce the Michael Vick dog jersey option, since Michael Vick outrage is not the top NFL headline for now, after Brett Favre's latest comeback. But next week, Vick will play in his first preseason game, and then the countdown will be on as to when he will play in the regular season.
Protests will likely continue against Vick throughout the season - but could they use a Michael Vick dog jersey as part of it, or would they not want to give the NFL 40 dollars for such merchandise? They can't customize it to display the name of Vick's "Bad News" dogfighting organization, however, since the NFL drew the line on that end The NFL, like the Eagles, defended themselves by saying Vick paid his debt to society, and is now working with humane societies. But that excuse didn't fly for many when the Eagles used it, and it likely won't fly now that the NFL is making money off Vick and dogs in this manner.
