Okay, here it is again for this year... please post any great game camera pics from before or during the season.

Also, feel free to comment about the situation in your county... populations, fawn production, forage conditions, timing of rut, etc.

After the season opens, please post any good scores/pics.

Good luck to all the Hunters out there!

Can we make this a 2009-2010 hunting season thread? Deer season seems so far off, but I'll be dove hunting, duck hunting, deer hunting, and I want to go on my first turkey hunt this year. I think we should just keep everyone updated on all of the great hunts this year.

Well the Dove were flying outside of Abilene this morning and the game warden was out too.

Group of 5 guys I was the only one that didn't get a ticket for something. One guy didn't renew his license (DUH), one had a plug in his gun and it broke as the game warden put in some shells and managed to get three in the tube and another guy didn't have a plug at all (thought he did, didn't check) and then another one didn't have his hunters ed certificate.

So guys, check your guns before you go out, make sure you have a current license and hunters ed certificate.

Other than that great opening day.

All in all opening day for dove was good! Went out with a group of buddies and between the five of us we ended up with 60 birds. Most were whitewings, it is amazing how those birds have increased in population over the last 10 years or so!

I didn't get a Mathews because I didn't want to spend $700+ but I did go with one of the new PSE's that Ive heard really good things about.

Well I'm looking for the best sight I can get, arrows, and such. i use a five pin tru-glo but there are lots of good sights on the market. as far as arrows in my opinion there is only one..........easton full metal jackets decked with bohning 2 inch fletchings. broadheads...... i shoot the 3 blade rage but some don't like the mechanical blades. i have no problem with them and they will cut a large hole.

On the evening of labor day I finally started my program to eradicate swine flu... (or at least the potential that eats the corn out of my deer feeders!)

Sorry for the poor pic quality. Only had my cellphone to take the pic.

(And yeah, that .223 takes down a hog just fine!)

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2662/3916722359_88350b9835.jpg  Swine Flu Eradication Program....I LIKE it!! I'm going to do my part as soon as I get home!! Nice rig too....EOtech on top.....good stuff.

I've had the same argument w/ friends as well about a 5.56/.223 not being enough gun for a pig. Hell...I know a guy who hunts em w/ an AR conversion w/ 9mm upper and a suppressor.

A friend of mine also told me one year that my .22-250 would not kill a deer. (He shoots a 7mm....not to be confused w/ a 7mm Mag). So to demonstrate my theory on how "speed/velocity kills"....we set up some steel plates hanging from a low branch in a tree. He shoots and knocks the plate out of the tree. He shouts and gives a fist pump. My turn. I chamber one...fire......and he yells "YOU MISSED".....to which I said..."no I didn't" We walked down...and sure enough, it had gone clean through...but did so w/ such velocity, it didn't even make the plate move. With some of the lighter loads (45g) I've been able to shoot empty soda cans on fence posts w/out making them move. I LOVE FAST, FLAT SHOOTING ROUNDS!!! My deer rifle is a .25-06!! :)

I agree, I've shot plenty of hogs with 5.56/.223, alot depends on the weight of the bullet and where you place your shot. I have some 37g RBCD blended metal rounds that will knock a hog straight to the ground. I've seen plenty of people take down deer with some very fast light rounds too, .204, .22-250, ect.

I always buy the cheap Remington UMC in either 55gr FMJ or 45gr HP when shooting my M4.

I do like the EOTech but am having to do some adjusting on my Nightime hunts. I don't have the extra cash to go Nightvision, but I am considering a 6V Varmit light attached to it... Big highpower red light. Or I could just use the BUIS and the Truck Headlights... ;)

I would not have believed it with the drought we are having but I checked the oak trees in southern San Saba county and a lot of them are covered in acorns. I know, stress a tree and they will deliver, but that has not always been the case.

Do you have to have like a photobucket account to post pics?

Gobbla2001

DD11 - I usually just go to www.imageshack.us and upload them there... just copy the link they give you when it's done... no account needed

Go to flickr.com

If you have a yahoo.com account then I think you are already signed up.

Once you upload a photo... just "view" it on flickr... right click... click on properties... copy the url... the insert the url into your post via the IMG button.

Use the IMG button to insert the URL for your pics.

Or type it out like so...

Adding Images

To include a picture or graphic within the body of your message, you can simply surround the address of the image as shown here:

Note that the http:// part of the image URL is required for the [img] code.

I'll try to get some field cam pics up on here of some 2 year olds out in the pasture.

We've only owned this place 2 years. This is our second deer season. Last season we applied for the MLD Permits, so we wiped out every native deer on the place minus a couple lucky ones that escaped. So this year there really isn't much to kill. I downed a doe 2 weeks ago but that's about it. The oldest deer in the pasture are 2, but they don't look like 2 year olds:D I'll go through em all and find a couple good ones.

I've also got a couple of game cam shots from up at my family's property. I'll put up some pics soon. Our pigs have disappeared for some reason....I suspect because of all of the acorns down in the bottom. Once those rot away and/or all eaten up, I expect them to return to the feeder. We've got a buncha young deer as well. One 8pt that looks like he'll be a nice one in another year or two.

update
Here is the picture.. He said the brow-tines (sp) are broken on either side but it still counts as a 12 pointer lol.. The 8 pointer he got last season out there was alot bigger but this one has more horns not sure which is a "bigger deal" it all tastes good to me.. The deer at the lease in DeWitt County has bigger deer than this one, so I am hoping he gets one next week here at "home"

Three different times I called turkeys in from over 300 yards only to get to watch them 75 yards away for over an hour and a half strut on the other side of a high fence that they refused to cross. I guess thats why they call it hunting and not killing though...

I've been ready for a long time. We are going to put out trail cameras next week to see what is out there. We had timely rains this year so the brush is in good shape. I think we are going to have some great bucks this year. The buck I am going to hunt (if he survived the off season) should score in the 160's. He is a great looking buck.

I used to hunt Dewitt County years ago. My lease was close to the dump in Yorktown. I bagged a pretty nice 8-point one year. I think the problem over there was that the locals were mostly meat hunters and nothing ever got to to grow up and reach its max potential.

The ranch I hunt on is high-fenced. About 6 years ago when the helicopter survey was done for MLD permits those guys carried 12-gauges and blasted every hog they saw. We only saw 3 hogs in the next 2 years and haven't seen one in the last 4 years. For some reason the hogs haven't dug under the fence to get on the ranch. This doesn't work on a low fence ranch though.

I love to hunt hogs too but they can be a major problem to a deer management program. We have a feeder set up outside the high fence so we can shoot some oinkers each year. We put a trail camera on that feeder for a week. All of the pictures were of hogs. There was not one deer in those pictures. Gonna be a lot of hogs die this fall.:)

I hunt strictly with a rifle. I broke my right arm about 10 years ago and screwed the nerves and arteries up in my left arm. It is just to painful to try to use a bow.
I'm proud of this buck. He has one of the most symetrical racks of all the deer I've killed. He is going on my office wall with the rest of his brethren.

This is my 2013 buck. Main frame 10 pt. Very old deer. We estimated his age to be 8 1/2. Scored in the 130's. Good management buck to take

I guess I'm done for this year. No bucks down but that is OK. Plenty of meat on ice. I guess if I had stayed out there I wouldn't have needed a cooler. Looks like plenty of ice right now!!
