My family owns a Chevrolet dealership in my small home town of 5000 or so. So everyone there knows me or my family.

Not to mention that my Grandfather has been the president of 2 or 3 banks in Gilmer also.

I'm pretty much a big deal.

Jessica McClure (the baby who fell in the well) is from Greenwood.

Most of you youngsters probably won't even remember who that is....some of you weren't even born yet.

One of our assistant coaches in Sweeny is Tracy Simien. He graduated from Sweeny in the 80's. Played in the NFL (Linebacker) for the Kansas City Chiefs. He played opposite of new Hall of Famer Derrick Thomas.

We have another up and comer....... Johnnie Lee Higgins (Current WR/PR/KR) for the Oakland Raiders.

Didn't they make a made-for-tv movie about that? Not sure I remember the event, but definitely the movie.

Yeah...it was called "Everybody's Baby"...and they did a PISS POOR job on "Texas accents."

What drove me crazy in that movie is the actress would be talking to a single person...ONE person....and ask "What are y'all doing?"

The part of Texas that I am from, "y'all is NEVER singular!!!

I noticed that Sandy on Spongebob does that too!!!

There are a couple of people that were born in Gilmer that became famous:

Don Henley (from the Eagles)- born in Gilmer, raised in Linden (40 mi. NE of Gilmer)

Johnny Mathis (singer) - born in Gilmer, raised in Los Angeles

The only famous person that I know of that was born AND raised in Gilmer was Robert L. "Silver Fox" Stephens. "Fox" Stephens was an Air Force test pilot that set several speed and altitude records while testing the Lockheed YF-12 and SR-71. The local airport in Gilmer is named after him.

Here ya go.................................:D

Candy Barr (July 6, 1935 – December 30, 2005) was an American stripper, burlesque exotic dancer, actress in one pornographic movie, and model in men's magazines of the mid-20th century.

During the 1950s, she received nationwide attention for her stripping career in Dallas, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas; her troubles with the law; shooting her estranged second husband; and being arrested and sentenced to a prison term for drug possession, as well as her relationships with Mickey Cohen and Jack Ruby.

After serving three years in prison, Barr began a new life in South Texas. She briefly returned to stripping in the late 1960s, posed for Oui magazine in the 1970s, and then retired.

In the early 1980s, Barr was acknowledged in the magazine Texas Monthly as one of history's "perfect Texans," along with such luminaries as Lady Bird Johnson.

Ingleside/Aransas Pass:
-Emory Bellard (Former TAMU head coach and U. Texas OC under Darrell Royal) was born and raised in AP, got his first head coaching job in Ingleside.

-Mark Crawford, former Ingleside mayor indicted in the mid-90's for murder.

-Gail Borden, founder of Borden's Milk, was one of the founders of Ingleside.

Gregory:
-Don Williams, country music singer ("I Believe in Love," "Good Ole Boys Like Me," "Tulsa Time," etc.) was born and raised in Gregory.

Portland:
-Ray Akins, Texas Football Coaching great and grandfather of NFL quarterback Drew Brees.

That's all I've got for the immediate area. Plenty of people have houses down there, but can't think of anyone else who actually lived there for any amount of time. I'm sure that G-P, AP, and Rockport have produced at least a few.
