This was the backfield of Notre Dame in their 1924 season - 85 years ago. They were QB Harry Stuhldreher, LHB Don Miller, RFB Jim Crowley and Fullback Elmer Laden. They played at Notre Dame from 1922 to 1924(before freshmen could play). They were given that nickname in 1925 even though they had played together the prior two seasons. They were coached by the great coach Knute Rockne. They had a 10 - 0 season and their closest games were against Army (ND won 13 - 7) and Northwestern
(13 - 7) and Army and Northwester were considered very good teams at the time. They played Stanford in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1, 2005 winning 27 to 10. Stanford had a star RB named Ernie Nevers who went on to a great NFL career. It would be 45 years before ND would play in a bowl game again.

These four backs were triple threats and could run, pass and kick.
Not as well known were the OL of that team The Seven Mules. Two of them went on to be in the football hall of fame. They were center Adam Walsh who was also the team captain and tackle Rap Miller.

Some Nebraska fans take pride in pointing out that Nebraska beat the four horsemen in two years (14 - 6 in 1922 and 14 - 7 in 1923). But the horsemen got their revenge in 1924 beating Nebraska 34 - 6.

It must be pointed out the Notre Dame is a Catholic college that not only has great teams but really stresses academics. In fact their football college graduation rate is in the high 90 percents. Very impressive indeed.

Will we ever give names like "The Four Horsemen" to Players nowadays.

The "original" 4 Horsemen were Ric Flair, Arn Anderson, Tully Blanchard, and Ole Anderson.

Those guys were great, especially when they were outlined by a blue-gray October sky. All that bewildering panorama stuff just gives me the shakes.
