Madison originally was a segregated school competing in the PVIL from 1956-1966. They were quite successful in both basketball and football during those years, losing in the 4A PVIL State Football Finals in both 1963 and 1966. Desegregation allowed Madison to join the UIL in 1967. After the 1970 school year the old Madison High was converted into a middle school but a new high school was built and reopened in the mid-'70s with their first varsity season being played in 1977. The mascot remained the same and the new high school drew from the same general geographic area as the old so the history is considered one continuous one.
