Monahans won the first ever UIL Football State Championship in a non-Large School classification back in 1948. They have maintained a pretty impressive all-time winning percentage over the years. Monahans ranks 8th out of all 3A teams statewide in total number of games won in the past 50 seasons (1960-2009).

If I'm not mistaken, that 1948 State Championship Team was the 1st EVER in UIL history to win 15 games in a single season (as it was the first year there was ever a 32-team playoff) and thus the 1st EVER to go 15-0-0 in a single season. It would be another 20 years before a largest classification school would ever go 15-0-0 when Austin Reagan did it in 1968.

I would be remiss if I didn't mention that Sweetwater ended the great Abilene Eagle's 2 year win streak back in 1958. We've been paying for that for some time now...

It's kind of interesting that all the teams in their 4A district in the 80's are now 3A except San Angelo Lakeview. Makes you wonder what all those teams will be like in 15 or 20 years? I hope wind power will help revitalize the West Texas economy there are some great towns out there it is sad to see them shrinking.

Thanks WOS87 for like the hundredth time.

Unfortunately Big Spring isn't very competitive
I remember one year recently that Sweetwater
manhandled them. They finished that season
at 3-7, made the playoffs, and won a game or
two. That says a lot for the state of 4a football
In West Texas. :(

Sweetwater...19-3 against Ft. Stockton??? That
Is why I'll be in Midland if the RANGERS (:D )
play them on a Thursday night. I wanna see why
Padilla has them at #8 in Region I.

Check out that 1998 season. 7-7, got whipped badly in several of those 7 losses, but made it to the semis, and only got beat 21-7 by Aledo in that one. Strange season! I'd like to hear from a Loboe faithful about that season. Wow what a roller coaster ride that must have been.

Yes that 1998 season was a ride, halfway through district i think the team changed QB's and a lot of stuff and got it rollin at the right time. In the Quarterfinals they manhandled the at the time Number 1 ranked team in the state breckenridge. And the game they lost against aledo it was much closer than 21-7.

I wondered why they thought that also. I bet it is because they have the potential to go a few rounds deep since they get West Texas schools first in the playoffs. I think several of the teams ranked 10-20th in his poll could beat Stockton, but several of those schools will miss out on the playoffs because of being in tough districts.

Will be interesting to see what former Sweetwater assistant Rex Whitfield can do with the Panthers this year. I believe he wasn't hired until late May or early June.

I agree when kids came back from injuries and the QB change was made those kids really started playing good. In the final district game against Greenwood is when they finally found there identity and it was the rebuilt offensive line that made the difference you want to see some great football get the game film of the Breckenridge vs Monahans game that year you will be impressed at the offensive line job those kids did.
Loboes had a shot against Aledo game was much closer than 21-7 Loboes turned ball over on first and goal fumble at the Aledo 3 in that game and got one called back. Against the State champs.
This was along with the 96 Iraan team one of the great coaching jobs of Larry Hanna former Lobo coach.

UPDATE: The history has been updated through the end of the 2009 season.

I am apparently missing a handful of wins from the early years as Monahans celebrated all-time win #500 late in the regular season this year

Again, I will open up another history thread that apparently people don't realize has been here for quite a while.

I'm in the process of updating the 2010 scores and will add in that missing Quarterfinal game.

UPDATE: The history has been updated through the end of 2010

I just noticed Monahans has been knocked out of the playoffs 6 times in the Quarterfinals by Brownwood, most recently in 2010. That's up there with the LaMarque - Calallen Semifinal curse.
