Wow, the 1934 team didn't score a point all year.

I just got access to the Brownwood Daily Bulletin archives and have already increased Brownwood's All-Time win total by 1. Here's a page from the October 27th, 1908 paper documenting a previously unknown 16-4 win by the high school over the Howard Payne College 2nd team.

Look in the bottom right corner to find the story.

Do you know if BW ever played or scrimmaged an NFL team! I read some where on the 3ADL that BW has some players now that might go straight to the NFL!;)

P.S. Thanks WOS87 for all the hard work you do!

I've also discovered 3 more losses to add to the history in addition to pushing the history back a year to 1907.

The following is an article from December 3rd, 1907 detailing a 0-9 loss to the Daniel Baker 2nd Team and also mentioning that they had lost two previous games to them earlier in the season.

We had to play these powerhouse college teams. No high school teams would play us. lol

I actually read tht Howard Payne helped develop the forward pass in the game of football. Any validity to that?

I found two tie games against Howard Payne in 1907

The first was 5-5 against the Howard Payne 2nd team and the second was 0-0 against a mixed Howard Payne team of both 1st and 2nd team players

December 6th, 1907

http://idisk.mac.com/cboehme69-Public/stats/120607brownwood.gif

December 10th, 1907

http://idisk.mac.com/cboehme69-Public/stats/121007brownwood.gif

They mention a 3rd game being scheduled at the end of that last article but I haven't found any evidence of it being played yet

The above scores have been added into the original post graphic pushing Brownwood over the 1000 documented games played mark.

UPDATE: The history has been updated through 2009.

Brownwood ends a 5 year run of their all-time winning percentage dropping with it making a rebound and increasing from 65.13% at the end of '08 to 65.29% at the end of '09

That run in the 60's and 70's was something special.
We need to remember that back then, only one team made the playoffs out of district.

Here's something interesting... Brownwood High played Howard Payne and Daniel Baker pretty regularly back in those old days....

The University of Texas also played Howard Payne and Daniel Baker.... http://www.jhowell.net/cf/scores/Texas.htm

UT also played Houston Sam Houston and Galveston Ball High schools back in the 1890's and 1900's

Texas A&M's 2nd football game ever was against Galveston Ball I believe

It was quite common for college teams to play high schools back then because (1) there wasn't an age limit on who could actually play on the high school team so some of those teams had actual faculty members playing on them and even up into the mid-1920's the upper age limit was 20 and (2) there were so few high school football programs at the time and travel was so much more difficult that high schools would play local college teams (or their reserves) for experience and to reduce travel expenses and college teams would play high schools essentially as practice.

Remember, the UIL wasn't even founded until 1909 so there were ZERO regulations in regards to high school football

Here's a better site going back further:

I think a former HPC (Howard Payne College) player was a big proponent of the forward pass in the 1940's. Here is a little bit of Howard Payne football trivia. HPC defeated Texas A&M in the first game ever played at Kyle Field.

BTW, May I suggest a sticky to a location with all of the team histories that you are working on. These should be easy access and I think will be visited often as people "wax nostalgic". Thank you for this work, it is obviously a labor of love for you.

With Brownwood's loss and Cuero's win last week, they are now tied for all time wins at 645.

All you can say is WOW.

The 2010 scores are now showing... if you can't see them refresh your browser. The 633 pts the Lions have already scored so far in 2010 blows away the previous highest offensive output in one season which was 501 pts in 1977. Wow! You hit 500 pts 9 games into this season.

over 800... I know Celina 2005 and SLC 1992 both had 803 pts for 16 game seasons. My initial guess would be Big Sandy in the mid-'70s with 824 but that's going off the top of my head

824 by '74 Big Sandy was what I was thinking too. They did it in 14 games I believe.

With 5 games left to possibly play. That's around 35-40 per game. That is less than our season avg. It's possible. Of course, we have to win.

We could seriously have 2 teams break this record this year. Refugio has scored 683 through 11 yes 11 games with 4 more left to play assuming they keep winning of course

1907 seems to be the inaugural year for the high school and it looks like they played Daniel Baker and Howard Payne three times each with a 0-4-2 record that year. Unfortunately the original file and subsequent gif above is from software that is now obsolete and which I can't alter. I will have to translate the original file into a newer spreadsheet format to change it. I'll get around to it eventually but it will take a ton of work.
