Can someone explain to me what exactly happened in 1988?

1987 we go 13-1 losing in the QF to WO-S. Had a GREAT season. 1988 we start out 4-0 whipping folks again. Something happened. Heard the field house got burned down and all sorts of stuff. Buncha players quit. We then lost our next 13 games. (4 more that season and 0-9 the next)

If anybody has any details of what actually went on I'd like to know. I've kinda gotten a vague second hand story before.... but I'm curious as to the truth. All I know is, our football program went in the tank there for awhile after that. Our all time winning % went from iver 51% to 46% in a matter of just a few years. Rough period for sure.

I've always wondered about this too, everytime I look at the season by season results. Amazing the team went from good to crap that quickly, something had to have gone down,

I'm blaming the discontinuation of the 8-track tape...

Did someone in the administration take a page from the Indians and host an 8-track demolition night?

it all makes sense now.

Due to the hurricane, Columbia played Foster the week before El Campo in a pick up game. I can't remember the score but I'll see if I can find it. I know that Columbia lost.

Thanks! I found it - a 13-27 loss to Foster - and added it in.

I had the complete Wharton football team history on my computer when I worked at the Journal-Spectator for 23 years

Im sure all the files were killed off after I got laid off in May

I'm just opening up the history threads of the final 12 as several people have requested it. Keep it to comments regarding the history of the particular team and not smack talk!! ....or else!

I'm working on adding in 2010 results but it's going slowly. I've been burning the candle at both ends with the new job and all as of late.
