RICHARD OLIVER'S VIEW FROM THE DUGOUT

Opening Pitch

Former Sinton headliner Mike Adams, a standout reliever for the Milwaukee Brewers just five years ago, is back on the mound in San Diego after working back from offseason shoulder surgery.

The Corpus Christi native, who will be 31 next week, was obtained by the Padres from the Indians for pitcher Brian Sikorski in July 2006. It didn't take him long to evolve into one of San Diego's most trusted arms out of the bullpen, as the Texas A&M-Kingsville-ex made 54 relief showings last year, going 2-3 with a 2.48 ERA.

That breakout season, which included a superb ratio of 74 strikeouts to 19 walks in 651/3 innings, came with a cost, however. Adams underwent surgery to repair a torn labrum and rotator cuff damage.

After brief rehab stints in San Antonio and Portland, including eight appearances and nine innings of work, Adams came off the 60-day DL for the Padres and has struck out 10, with only two walks, in 13 innings at the big-league level. He owns a career-best 1.38 ERA, heading into the weekend, in 14 games.

Adams had originally been signed by the Brewers as a non-drafted free agent in 2001.
