Thumbs sideways (maybe like a slice along the neck) was the sign to kill the vanquished.

Even wikipedia doesn't have it right.

Well that depends on who you read or listen to

Moreover, Corbeill thinks that the raised thumb was probably in motion, reminiscent of gangsters ordering someone out of a room or of modern umpires declaring a runner out rather than safe.

No kidding, I watched "Wild Hogs" just Monday night and john Travolta made the move pretty darn good. Probally would have suck without him.... and Martian Lawrence
