A Southeast Texas man and his wife were in jail Thursday after a state inspector found six children locked in tool shed behind an unlicensed daycare center.

State officials say the children were surrounded by lawn equipment, gasoline and insecticide when they were found Wednesday.

Austin County District Attorney Travis Koehn says Marietta Patek, 55, is charged with six counts of child endangerment, while her husband, Freddie Patek, 47, faces an evidence tampering charged.

Child Protective Services spokeswoman Gwen Carter says 14 children ranging from toddlers to preteens were kept at the house.

She says the Pateks could legally care only for three children at a time.

Why would anyone pay to lock your kids in a shed when you can simply do it in the comfort of your own home.

I disagree, it was an injection of humor. I object to you calling this person an idiot, it seems to be a personal attack. Besides, I lock my kids in the shed out back with the dogs all the time.

I hope they aren't pit bulls!

For reasons such as this, I am sooooo glad I don't have to use a daycare center to babysit my girls. My wife is a school teacher, which means when she is at school so are the girls, and when she is at home that's where the girls are. We're truly blessed in that way.

She is with my best friends mom who've I've known for over 5 years. Taylor is the only kid she watches and her family is like our family.
And for the last 3 months she has been with me, I am still jobless.

IMO this is a lot like the pitbull stories there are so many out there that you never hear from and never have any problems with but just like with pit bulls the day care abuse stories are so horrifying that even though you know 99 percent of the time your kid is safe it just doesnt seem worth the risk.

Every one of my kids went to daycare. I am certain that some are shady, but I was extremely pleased with the care my kids received. :)

I heard on the news that they put the kids in the shed during an inspection so it would seem like they only had 3 kids there so they could pass.

It wasn't like they were locking em up in there all day everyday, but still....... it's something that shouldn't have happened and these people need to be punished.

I am sure there are some good ones out there. I have heard more bad stories from daycares around here than I have heard good from people who use day cares. A lot of my friends are the same way... they hate daycares. I just dont trust them.

Way too much generalization here.

I know here in the metroplex since there is ample competition, the day care quality is quite high. It's not momma, but there's some really good one's out there.
