We just weren't allowed to do offensive stuff. There was a camera right on you as you walked off that you could signal too.

We don't get diplomas on stage just the holder, we got them after the ceremony.

Very simple. Expectations and consequences. Nothing new, just a sign of the times when people think that a consequence for an action is "outrageous". We need more people to take a stand on these matters.

I disagree...the punishment needs to fit the crime!!

He bowed and blew a kiss to his family....and he doesn't get his diploma that he worked to get for 12 years?? That's BS!!!

Here is a link with the video.....I don't see what he did that was SO bad!!

Sure, when it makes SENSE! This is just dumb. Maybe if he'd flipped everyone the bird I could understand, but not for blowing a kiss to his mom/family/audience.

He will get it eventually. It's not like he will go through life without a diploma and people thinking he never graduated HS.

Either the kid has done the necessary work to get his/her diploma or not. Unless the act is criminal, the school should have no choice but to award the diploma...schools and school administrators take themselves way too seriously sometimes.

That's not the point!

I know that just because he doesn't have that paper doesn't mean he didn't graduate High School.

I have been out of school for over 25 years and not once in all that time have I ever needed my physical diploma for anything.

He didn't exactly moon the audience or shoot the bird.

I believe in expectations and consequences as well, but this is one of the crowning acheivements of a young person's life, one they likely don't get to without family support. If he wants to acknowledge them, so be it.

What kind of kiss was it?

Because if he blew an Australian kiss....well...punishment fits the crime.

It's hard to tell more without knowing more. The title is misleading because it says the student was "denied his diploma." Sounds more like he just couldn't walk, which should be the case if you break a rule.

On the other hand, expectations used to be reasonable. If people were bouncing on rubber ducks before graduation and this was the incident that was punished, then where were those "expectations" that had "consequences... clearly spelled out" earlier in the ceremony?

I wholeheartedly support personal responsibility and consequences for your actions. But in this case the administrator overreacted and in my opinion did something that might be illegal. The kid has already earned the diploma. He acheived all the academic and moral requirments to acheive this honor and I don't think the administrator has the authority to take it away now. The administrator is using punishment that is retroactive. I don't think it would ever hold up in court.

He has a right to his diploma, but not the graduation ceremony. Rules are rules, and if he was told not to do that and he did it anyway, then the punishment fits the crime(no graduation ceremony). But, they can't keep his diploma from him.

I could be completely wrong but wouldn't most kids prefer to NOT have the ceremony in the first place???? At least most boys would.

I didn't care for it.

It's all for the parents anyways, that is why no fun is allowed and noise makers are banned. Should be a celebration but it's more like a funeral

From the video...it sounded like both the parent and student signed a "code of conduct" pact. But....it wasn't lined out what was and was not acceptable.

I guess the tossing around of beach balls was okay, because the kids who did that got their diplomas....but HORRORS..do NOT blow a kiss to your family!!

Also, according to the video, one kid had to sit by himself (or with teachers) and another one was escorted out by police...I wasn't real clear on why.

You could hear a big "BOOOO" when she told him to return to his seat!

WOW!!! Noisemakers are allowed at Greenwood graduation. There were several beach balls going, the tops of several graduation "caps" were decorated with glitter art. The speeches by the Salutatorian and Valedictorian (who are coincidentally identical twins) were hilarious!!!

For a boring graduation.....I actually kinda enjoyed myself!!

I was going to bring a beach ball and put some crazy stuff on the top of my cap, but the rest of my class was lame and I didn't want too be th eonly one.

So, we just sat there and had a homo graduation.

I entertained myself with the crowd tho. ha.

People used to bring air horns and stuff, but there was a big right up in the paper after graduation one year with the editor bitching about people cheering loud and people dressed in shorts and t-shirts.

They eventually banned the noise makers because people would cheer for 20 seconds and you would miss the next kids name. Surprised there hasn't been an audience dress code yet, that is something our ISD would do.

That reminds me....when my son graduated in 2004, for some reason everyone gave the Principal a quarter when they shook his hand. I can't remember what the story was behind it now.....it was hilarious watching him try to pocket all those quarters!
