Did you read the SI article? If he had been eligible for this years draft, he would have gone either 1st or 2nd! Staying in high school will not make him better. In fact, it may make him worse. I don't know what I would do as a parent but this isn't a knee jerk reaction from a spoiled kid. It looks to be well thought out. I wish him nothing but success.

How does his decision make him a loser? It's his life, his choice. Wishing failure on someone shows alot of immaturity on your part.

Don't blame him; blame the MLB for signing Cuban & Dominican 16 yr olds to 4 million dollar contracts. They set the bar, this guy has twice as much buildup behind him.

I'd probably do the same thing if I were him. If it falls through, at least he's got 4-5 million to pay for college later on!

I read somewhere that Troy Aikman just got his college degree, 21 years after he left UCLA.

I think it's pretty difficult to judge someone's situation unless you walk in their shoes. It's not like he has committed a crime or anything.

And this story makes me think of the old saying "It's not where you start that's important, it's where you finish."

My ex-father-in-law dropped out of school in the 6th grade to go to work in the oil fields.

There are no guarantees in life. If the opportunity is there, how can you blame him and he certainly is not a loser, IMO.

Interesting list, Red. But I think there's one huge difference between all of them and this baseball player.

$$$

I will fully admit I would have second guessed any one of those people for dropping out, as they had no guarantee of making it. They made their own successes in hindsight, but at the time it may not have seemed like the best choice.

This kid, though (or young adolescent), is pretty much guaranteed 5-10 million next year, more than many people will make over a lifetime. So, if anything, that drives home your point twice as much!

if the teachers have taught you to read and write in elementary school then all the rest of your schoolin is just filler to see if you can be sane when it comes time to drive....

high school classes don't help a great athlete like this 1 bit - they just put off his earning years.....for the 1st century of this great country's existence a kid started work by 10 or 12 at the latest - it was about reading and writing....then the teachers' unions got involved and forced great athletes to stay in school 12 years so the teachers would feel needed, and no real good has come from it....

Pmoney
06-15-2009, 06:34 PM
I don't wish anything bad upon the kid cause hell he most likely is going to the Nationals and that's bad enough:D ...but I do hate to see this happening because what if he gets to play half a season and has a horrible knee, elbow, or shoulder injury and at catcher those could possibly end your career and we have to remember he will be 17 or 18 around this time so we can almost expect him to blow some of that guaranteed money on a brand new mercades or an eight room house he can live in with all his party friends and he becomes broke and cant pay for college...I know that was a BIG what if but these things happen and I hope it doesn't happen to him...I say finish HS with your friends, go to college and enjoy it(for at least 2 yrs) and then start your "job" because you will never get these days back, ya you can go back to college but going to college at 18-24 and going to college at 25+ is a totally different....and again I know my hypothetical situation is unlikely but it still happens on occasion

The guy is going to be a millionaire soon enough, he is getting his GED, so its not like he has absolutely nothing to fall back on.

This is a good move for him because now he can face people who are closer to his level and have better training to help his development.

I think the one bad side about this is that it sets an example that other kids/parents think they can do the same thing. Those kids/parents may not plan properly or their kid may not have the same ability as this kid, even though someone tells them they do.

His bat speed is faster than Mark McGwire's in his prime.....his longest homerun was measured at 570 Feet. This just doesn't sound natural for a 16 yr old. This kid may be the Michael Jordan of Baseball but he could be the biggest mistake for a team that takes him. Hope for the best.

You just made my points.

Most drop outs are people who are on drugs and are to lazy to do the simple work that HS requires.

If you have a chance to master a skill that will earn you millions, why waste time with the pointless 4 years that is High School?

Would he be a loser if he was a science wizard and skipped out on 2 years of HS to go to some science academy and learn nothing but science?

High School would be a huge waste of time for this kid. If he can get that one big contract he will be set for life. I can't say I blame the parents for this decision. If you consider the condition of most schools these days anyway it makes even more sense.....
