Your opinions please, but I doubt we need a new classification for types of clouds.
I hope you folks in Liberty Hill are OK tonight. We just had a tornado in San Pat last week tear that place up some.:(

Or we can blame it on Gore's gas guzzling, high polluting vehicles. Or maybe Gore's high energy using home.

Article in this mornings Temple paper. They are called Mammatus clouds.

I remember the first time I saw them when I was in high school during baseball practice. About 9 small funnels popped out and went immediately back up. It was awesome.

I hate to say it, but those are not mammatus clouds. They look nothing like mammatus clouds. I have seen these before though. These are usually common with upper air disturbances and severe thunderstorm episodes, where Iowa had some severe weather the other day, and from what I understand, this picture what taken in Iowa:thinking: . Here are what mammatus clouds look like.

The ones over Central Texas yesterday (and the ones in the Temple paper) look like the ones you posted but not as dark or large. If it is the shape that defines them I think they are the same.

I've seen these several times before, however, usually AFTER a severe storm has passed. Never seen them BEFORE a severe storm arrived.

Yes, the ones over Central Texas yesterday were mammatus clouds. I was referring to the ones in the picture at the top of the thread(those are not mammatus). Mammatus are associated with severe weather, but do not actually produce severe weather. They are usually seen under the anvil of a thunderstorm.
