Why do some companies do this and why should it have any bearing on your employment status?

i believe its just a credit report from like equifax or experian or something...they see it as important because they want to identify anyone who could potentially be a liability monetarily or, depending on the type of work, a security risk. this is how ingrained we have become in money as a society.

Even scarier, it is an indication of how poorly many people handle their personal finances. If someone is deeply in debt and not current on payments they are indeed an unncecessary risk to a potential employer.
