If Wharton had a few more kids, they would be 4A. They actually used to be 4A up until about 10 years ago or so.

Add Daingerfield, Jefferson, White Oak, and Sabine to that list. They were 3A schools that dropped down to 2A.

That's interesting. But how about the number of 4A and 5A schools that are now 3A? Didn't West Orange-Stark used to be 5A in the early 1980s? Jasper was a 4A power for a number of years. I'm sure there are many others.

Southlake Carroll was also 3A in the 80's, and look at them now.

Cameron has been on the verge of moving down for many years, even back when I was in high school there in the mid-1990s. I've always been hoping this would happen so Cameron could totally dominate in Class 2A.

I need to work on these again and finish up Regions II and IV

3A Class Seniority

What you have below are the 43 schools aligned to 3A Region I and the 44 schools aligned to 3A Region III for 2008 ranked in descending order by total years competing in the largest existing classification down. (e.g. the 4 schools to have spent time competing in the largest classification are listed first, followed by the 20 schools who have spent time in the 2nd largest classification, etc.). I plan to do the remaining 3A regions and will add them in to this post eventually, but it's pretty tedious work putting these together and takes time. The columns from left to right indicate:

Rank - the rank for the region of schools who have competed the most seasons in the largest existing classification. Ties were broken by total number of wins in the largest class.

Dist - the district in which the school in question will compete in the 2008 season

School - the team in question.

Class - due to the shift in the naming of the 5 classifications in 1980 the largest classification has been both 4A (prior to 1980) and 5A (since 1980). Since Class 4A in the 1970's and earlier and Class 5A in the 1980's and later are equivalent, the records of those periods were combined:
The Largest existing classification is indicated by 5A/4A
The 2nd largest by 4A/3A
The 3rd largest by 3A/2A
The 2nd smallest by 2A/1A
The smallest by 1A/B

Yrs - the total number of seasons competing in varsity district play in each of the classifications listed going back either to the beginning of the program or back to 1951 for the older schools. The maximum number is 57 years (1951-2007)

W/L/T/Win % - the total wins/losses/ties and winning percentage logged by each team while competing in each of the classifications.

Seasons competing - the range of years during which each school was aligned to each of the classifications.

Class 3A Region I Seniority

3 Region I schools have spent time competing in the largest existing classification and 26 schools have spent time in the 2nd largest existing classification. Decatur, West and Dalhart are the only Region I programs to have spent all 57 seasons since the development of the 5 classification system competing in the 3rd largest class.

Class 3A Region II Seniority

**Under Construction**

Class 3A Region III Seniority

4 Region III schools have spent time competing in the largest existing classification and 24 schools have spent time in the 2nd largest existing classification. Caldwell is the only Region III program to have spent all 57 seasons since the development of the 5 classification system competing in the 3rd largest class.

Don't forget, the UIL will probably try to keep about the same number of 3A schools as we currently have. Therefore it is unlikely that the bottom number will move up much when we see the next alignment in Feb 2010.

That's somewhat true. I can see the top number going up, however as more and more large schools are added in Houston, DFW and SA.

Small 4A schools like Tuloso-Midway and Rockport-Fulton will probably be 3A the next time around.

could be, I had never heard of SLC before we played them in 1993 - I just remember watching a heartwrenching loss to them in 1993 :( then it seems like they went to 4a the next alignment and then 5a the following alignment. They grew by leaps and bounds..

SLC was still 2A in the 1985 season and could not beat Pilot Point. They are 1-10 all time against Pilot Point. They moved up to 3A in 1986, 4A in 1994, and 5A in 2002.

SLC was 3a in 91 and 92. Pilot Point played Goldthwaite in semi-finals in 1992 and 1993. The 1992 game was in Glen Rose. Final score was 0-0.
BTW, Pilot Point fits in the list of once 3a and now 2a.

Rockport-Fulton USED to be in 3A....Port Isabel played them in the 2nd round of the playoffs in 1992, tied 21-21 and PI advanced on 1st downs if I remember correctly.

They had Dat Nguyen as their fullback.

Really? Who did you play for? You must've been in the same district with them, because they didn't beat the same team in the playoffs those two years. They did beat the Gladewater Bears in '90 and '91 in the playoffs, though. If you played for Gilmer, where you're from now, SC beat them 42-0 in '90, and Forney beat them 34-21 in '91. The Buckeyes didn't make the playoffs in '92.
