What a great game. Bellville is on a very impressive win streak in the playoffs.

Congrats to District 25AAA, battle for the Region up next! I believe Bellville beat Giddings twice in district play, I could be wrong. Will this be best of 3, or winner takes all?

I just got home from the game this evening in San Marcos. What a game! I have to say that Bellville's comeback at the end of the game was impressive. I definitely see an improvement in Bellville from how they looked in the Wharton series. Robstown sure brings a spirited crowd with them. IMHO, the Robstown coaching staff didn't make a wise move in pulling their starting pitcher in the 7th inning. That right there set off the chain of events that ended with the Bellville win. Good job on the win, Bellville. I am really hoping the Giddings/Bellville showdown series is played in Weimar, but I am thinking it will most likely be in Brenham. Do you think it will be played at Leroy Dreyer Field on the Blinn campus or at Brenham High School?

Brahmas rally to oust Cotton Pickers
Bellville scores 7 in last inning to secure win

By Lee Goddard (Contact)
Sunday, May 31, 2009

CORPUS CHRISTI — SAN MARCOS — Robstown High coach Steve Castro gathered his baseball team around him Saturday evening, but there wasn’t much he could say.

The Cotton Pickers had just been ousted from the playoffs in a most brutal fashion. The team gave up seven runs to Bellville in the bottom of the seventh — including a two-out game-winning RBI single by No. 9 hitter Joe Gaffey — and lost 10-9 in Game 2 at Texas State, eliminating Robstown from the Class 3A region semifinals.

So, Castro struggled to comfort nine seniors and a host of sophomores, some of whom were staring ahead trying to fight emotions, others who had broken down into tears.

“We just couldn’t close it out. We were outs away,” Castro said. “I just couldn’t find the right words. I told them words of encouragement. But I don’t know if I can find the words to really encourage them.

“I’ve been through a lot of games like this. It hurts more because of the kids’ feelings. We did the best we could, and that’s baseball.”

That sets up an all-district showdown for the region title. But it’s not the one many South Texas fans anticipated — with best-of-three series sweeps, District 25-3A mates Bellville (22-7) and Giddings will meet. It’s not the Pickers and Sinton, which lost Saturday in Giddings’ final at-bat.

Robstown (28-8-1) seemed poised to overcome a tough break and force a third game in the series. Leading 1-0, a bad-hop single knocked out senior shortstop Ruben Elizondo, who trotted off the field. Elizondo later was taken off on a stretcher into an ambulance and sent to the hospital for x-rays.

But the team peppered the Brahmas with 11 hits and took advantage of six walks and three errors. Manuel Leal, Elizondo’s replacement — and the fifth sophomore on the field — ignited a two-run fourth and the Pickers coasted to a 9-3 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh.

Starter Ryan Velasquez allowed the first three runners to board and was pulled. Randy Flores entered, but Bellville chipped away with five of the next six batters reaching base, including an RBI double by Ryan Hackemack that fell a foot short of being a game-tying home run.

“I’m proud of the kids,” Brahmas coach David Cerny said. “They just kept getting on base and kept believing.”

Leal relieved Flores with a 9-8 lead and one out. After a walk loaded the bases with one out, Blake Gremmel hit a chopper to second. The throw home bounced in front of the plate. Hackemack scored the tying run on the second error of the inning.

Leal induced a line out and keep the game tied with two outs. But then Gaffey drilled a shot between third and short that sent Antony Moreno in from third with the game-winning run.

The damage in the seventh: One hit batsman, two errors, three walks, five hits and seven runs.

“We couldn’t close it,” Castro said. “They hit the ball well. We couldn’t find the arms to close it. The two errors they just played a little bit better than us the last few innings.”

Congratulations to Bellville on a great comeback win. Hats off to Robstown and their great fans. One thing about sports, you will always have a winner and loser. I feel for the Robstown team, tough way to lose, but be proud of your season and good luck in the future. Hope the SS will be ok.

wow - I got the update yesterday, but reading the updates is nice way to get a "feel" for the game. I guessed right in picking Bellville to win the series, I honestly didn't think it'd be this good of a series though.

Congrats to both teams. Region IV fans experienced some great games this weekend!

Whoever wins will represent Region IV very well in Austin!

Sinton doesn't despise or fear anyone. The Pirates always come with what we have and take our shots. Prior losses do nothing but add to the motivation the next time. Thanks for the respect, we appreciate it, and it's mutual.

Anyone hear what the attendance was at the game Saturday? I would guess about 500 - 600.

Texas State had a nice new complex.

tigerfan09
06-01-2009, 01:46 PM
Yes, the facility there at Texas State is very nice. I spent the game on Saturday standing behind Randy Reets and enjoying the cool breeze up there at the top. I would say that Robstown brought a few more fans with them than Bellville did, but I would put the estimated attendance at about 750 on Saturday.
