Buffs hurler strikes out 11 for 7-3 win to open 3A baseball series

SAN ANTONIO — Sinton coach Gene Kasprzyk knew he was going up against a tough pitcher in Giddings starter Trey Masek. He was right about that as the Buffaloes ace piled up 11 strikeouts in six innings of work against the Pirates in a 7-3 Giddings victory.

The win give the Buffaloes a 1-0 lead in this best of three region semifinal. Game two of the series is Saturday at 3 p.m. at Northeast ISD field, with a third game to immediately follow, if necessary

Kasprzyk thought his squad got some good hits off Masek, but just couldn’t bring in runs.

“He did pretty good with runners on,” Kasprzyk said.

Giddings, District 25-3A champions, improved to 19-5-1. The Pirates drop to 24-8.

After only getting two hits through the first four innings and trailing 2-0, the Buffaloes finally got to Sinton starter Tim Cortez in the fifth. Before the disa

Trey Masek collected his third hit of the night. Ty Marlow followed up with double to put runners at second and third. Rush Plumlee got Giddings on the board with an RBI single. Zach Berry worked a walk to load the bases. Another walk to Ethan Kmock tied the game at 2. Vinson Gonzales then singled in a run off new pitcher Ociel Martinez. The rally continued on a Lance Krause hit to second that plated a run. Philip Fritshe and Brooks Marlow drove in the final two runs of the inning before Martinez could strike out Masek. However, by that time, Sinton already trailed 7-2.

Sinton opened scoring in the first when Roy Perez reached on a fielder’s choice. Perez then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Shane Segovia then took a 2-2 pitch over the center fielder’s head for a stand-up double, scoring Perez. Segovia advanced to third on an errant throw by the catcher. Josh Rodriguez then scored Segovia on a single past a diving second baseman.

The Pirates managed a run in their half of the fifth. Segovia and Rodriguez singled and two passed balls scored Segovia.

Tim pitched a great game into the 5th gving up only 2 hits but started to lose control of the strike zone in the 5th as walks hurt him in that inning. Shane for game 2 on 5 days rest. Still think Sinton should win this, ran into a bad inning in a game of inches as Oceil Martinez just missed the little pop in front of him that would had ended the inning with the game tied. Get'm Saturday Pirates.

It was a good game through 4 1/2 innings. I knew going into the 5th with Giddings' top of the order coming up that if Tim could just get through the inning we'd be okay. I hate being right all the time! :D

It was a great inning by Giddings. That is what good ball team's do. They make you pay for little mistakes. 2 missed opportunities to get out of the inning. I had deja vu flashbacks of the Medina Valley game! :eek: :doh:

I wish someone would explain to all 4 pitchers why in the 3rd round of the playoffs they couldn't have an umpire that knew where his own strike zone was! :rolleyes:

I like our chances with Shane on the mound Saturday. Let's get through game 2 and hope we have to worry about who pitches in game 3. ;)

Sinton hits the ball well. Giddings catcher is gonna have to do a better job behind the plate. Too many pass balls that luckily didn't hurt them. Saturday will be a battle. Good luck to both teams.
