View Full Version : Things I've learned in my college math class

No joke...these are some of the things that my math professor has taught us during class this week:

1. The number 4 is pretty close to the number 5

2. In many mathematical problems, there are two numbers involved, and one is usually bigger than the other. For purposes of our math class, the bigger number will always be referred to as the "big number" and the smaller number will always be referred to as the "small number", not vice versa.

3. It doesn't matter where you put your money on a roulette wheel. If you play it 1000 times, you will lose $.05 for every dollar that you bet.

4. Gambling on a single number in roulette is more dangerous than betting on a column, but the winnings also pay more.

5. The square root of 180 multiplied by the square root of 5 divided by 6 is five (he calculated that in his head in about 2 seconds).

Is that a remedial math class? but seriously, what math class?

no, it's actually an "advanced" math course

Elementary Probability and Statistics 1680.

did you know that the probablity of something happening is always going to be between 0 and 1?

Hey czy I know there is a math exercise where you can prove 2 = 1. I used to know it but don't remember it. The trick is you are dividing a number by zero which you can't do. Maybe your math professor knows it too. :)

That doesn't seem like a big enough issue to frustrate every mathematician in history.

You are right crz. That is the trick. You can't divide a number by 0.

Maybe your math professor knows it too. :) Yeah, it's if you have like 1.999...you subtract the decimals or whatever, and divide, somehow you get 2...
BUT the main thing I've learned is that I can concentrate for about 7 min, my mind wanders for about 10 minutes after that, and that it takes me the rest of the class to try and keep myself awake.
But the math is really not as hard as I thought it'd be! :D

2/0 = undefined
1/0 = undefined
undefined = undefined
therefore 2 = 1
