SAN ANTONIO — It was a good night all around for the Sinton baseball team on Monday as it advanced to the Class 3A regional semifinals with a 10-0 win over Bandera at Northside ISD.

It was the second straight run-rule decision for the Pirates (24-7).

“I was really excited that we came out and swung the bat really well,” Sinton coach Gene Kasprzyk said after the game. “We haven’t had a lot of game-situation play in the last month, so to come out tonight against a couple of really good pitchers was good.

“I thought our hitters were aggressive. That was my biggest concern just not having played a lot recently. ‘What would be like at the plate?’ and they answered the bell pretty well.”

The Pirates didn’t need much offense as junior Shane Segovia allowed only three hits while striking out nine Bulldogs batters.

Segovia said he felt good after his teammates staked him to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. In the second through fourth was when the right-hander really got into a groove, though, striking out seven of nine batters.

“Shane’s pretty much one of those guys that pounds the strike zone,” Kasprzyk said. “He rarely beats himself — doesn’t walk many and stays ahead in the count.

“He’s one of those guys that you can count on to be solid almost any night.”

Left fielder Roy Perez started off the scoring for the Pirates in the top of the first with a home run over the 300-foot sign in left field.

Chris Garcia led off the second with a single over the shortstop on the first pitch. The next pitch hit Carson Cave. Garcia and Cave both advanced on an errant pickoff throw to second, then Garcia came home for the game’s second run on a wild pitch. Two batters later, Cave scored on the second wild pitch of the inning.

The Pirates scored three runs in the third. Gabe Garcia doubled to put runners on second and third, knocking Bandera starter Noah Robison off the mound. Relief pitcher Brandon Jennings then proceeded to walk Chris Garcia to load the bases. Cave knocked in two runs with a single to left-center, then Chris Garcia came in on a Ryan Cantu single.

In the top of the fifth, Josh Rodriguez led of with a single to left field. Rodriguez advanced to third on another errant throw to first and was singled in by Chris Garcia. Cave and Cantu followed with singles to load the bases. A wild pitch by new pitcher Brad Elliot brought in Garcia from third. Ryan Sanchez knocked a ball to the shortstop that the Bulldogs bobbled, and a wide throw to first allowed Cave to score from second.

The Bulldogs (21-7-1) threatened in the first, putting runners at second and third, but Segovia ended the inning with his first strikeout of the night.

Sinton will play Giddings in the next round.
