EL CAMPO - Two Victoria residents, a 14-year-old girl and a 47-year-old man, were killed and five others injured in a one-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 59 at 7:40 p.m. Sunday.

Alyssa Burleigh, a student at Howell Middle School, and Douglas Gene Barham, 47, were pronounced dead at 8:41 p.m. Sunday by Justice of the Peace Cynthia Kubicek, a dispatcher with the Department of Public Safety office in Pierce said Monday.

The two were traveling with six others, also of Victoria, on U.S. Highway 59 South, about 300 feet outside of the El Campo city limit, when the 2001 Chevrolet Suburban left the highway to the right and struck a guard rail, causing it to go into a side skid, according to Trooper Christopher Champion's report.

The Suburban then skidded off the overpass, rolling several times and coming to rest underneath the overpass, according to the report. The posted speed for this section of the highway is 70 mph.

Driver Garrett James Barham, 17, was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston. He was in stable condition with leg injuries, according to the report.

Passengers Maddie Barham, 14, Chase Weaver, 11, and Maritia Kay Barham, 46, all of Victoria, were also taken Memorial Hermann. They were listed in stable condition with internal injuries and possible broken bones, according to the report.

The other passenger, Carson Barham, 11, was taken to El Campo Memorial Hospital. He was in stable condition with cuts and bruises, according to the report.

Seatbelts were worn by all in the vehicle, except Douglas Gene Barham. It is unknown if he was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, the dispatcher said.

Champion was assisted by Troopers David Hill, Carlos Wilson, John Kopacz, Michael Hagg, Jose Mena, the Wharton County Sheriff's Office, El Campo Police Department and El Campo EMS, according to the report.
