Pickers bring down Hawks
Velasquez tosses no-hitter in win
By George Vondracek (Contact)
Saturday, May 23, 2009

ROBSTOWN The last time Robstown High School’s baseball team showcased its wares in front of its home fans the effort was less than inspired, despite a victory in the Cotton Pickers’ postseason opener.

Suffice to say, Robstown is back in the swing of things.

Michael Velasquez threw a no-hitter and pinch-hitter John Paul Rodriguez delivered a three-run home run. The Cotton Pickers swamped Zapata by bunching all of their runs in the third and fourth innings on the way to an 11-0, five-inning romp over the Hawks in Game 1 of the best-of-3 Region IV-3A quarterfinal series Friday night.

The series resumes at 3 p.m. today in Zapata with a third game to follow if necessary.

It was a sharper effort all the way around than what the 25-7-1 Cotton Pickers displayed a little more than a week ago in their 6-2 win over Port Isabel in the area round.

“We talked about it. I don’t know if it was the layoff, but we were a little more enthusiastic tonight,” Robstown coach Steve Castro said. “With young kids, I think they’re finally understanding what the playoffs are about.”

What they were about Friday was Velasquez, who tossed the first playoff no-hitter for Robstown since Joey Gonzales’ gem in 2003. Velasquez (10-3) struck out eight and faced one batter more than the minimum. Save for a leadoff walk to Joey Saenz in the third inning, Velasquez’s performance would have been perfect.

“Fastball, curveball. That’s what was going really good for me,” said Velasquez, who has won his last six decisions. “I started out rough at the beginning of the season, but I’ve got it down now.”

Velasquez needed only 58 pitches to dispatch the 20-8 Hawks. After the walk to Saenz, who eventually was stranded at third, Velasquez set down the final nine Zapata hitters he faced.

“That kid is a good pitcher. He’s probably the best pitcher we’ve faced this year,” Zapata coach Rene Alvarez said. “We just couldn’t catch up with him.”

It took three innings before Robstown got to Zapata starter Isaac Patterson (6-3). But the Cotton Pickers sent 11 batters to the plate, scoring six times, aided by three Zapata errors. Joshua Rivera drove in two runs with a bases-loaded single, Ryan Velasquez, Felipe Rios and Alex Marroquin had RBI and another run scored on a throwing error.

The Cotton Pickers continued the assault with a five-run fourth off relievers Luis Jaime Gonzalez and Mike Garza. Ryan Velasquez’s second RBI of the game, a wild pitch and Rodriguez’s pinch-homer helped lead to an early conclusion of the game.

“We’d been playing decent ball, making plays and getting some clutch hits,” Alvarez said. “Today, we just ran into a buzzsaw.”

The Robstown-Zapata winner will face either Bellville or sixth-ranked Sweeny in next week’s regional semifinals.
