View Full Version : Profanity

How do you feel about profanity? I think most folks are probably guilty of "spicing" their conversation with the occasional 4-letter expletive now and then, but what are your personal views concerning the limits of it's useage/non-useage?

I personally try to refrain from using the Lord's name in vain and avoid using any profanity in front of women, kids, and any persons I do not know well. Around men, I probably let fly with the best of em'. I never, ever use it in business transactions.

Useage of the "F" word after every other word by someone doesn't offend my sensibilities, but rather gives me tired head and causes me to question the intelligence of the individual.

around the kids i try not to but around my wife and friends they usually fly pretty often...i have tried to tone it down but cursing is like a drug it is addicting and hard to kick!

i'm cool with profanity when used appropriately. like, an f-word when it naturally flows with the conversation, etc.

i hate when people just it 5 times in a 6 word sentence. over usage = UGH.

I don't get why some words are considered bad.

I for one have never once used a cuss word. outside of sporting events, video games, being frustrated, arguing with people

profanity just shows a lack communication skills.

Profanity is a sign that a person isn't really educated because they can't express themself with proper English. Another sign of not being really educated is someone who slams doors.

At least I have been told these things so this is second hand pass on.

LOL!

For me it depends on what crowd I'm in.

Example #1: I made a road trip this last season with a guy that
doesn't cuss. So I didn't and communicated just fine.

Example #2: I made a road trip with two guys that did cuss. So
I did too. We all communicated just fine!

I don't use it and see no need for it as I can express both happiness and anger without resorting to profanity. While I am generally not offended when others use it, some people seem to feel it is appropriate at all times. My observation is that younger people seem to use profanity on an every occasion basis. But then I don't use "like" or "you know" so I am probably old fashioned. Judging from my age, I KNOW I'm old fashioned.

The ones who do offend me are people in public places who use curse words aloud and think everyone should accept it. I have been known to ask people to tone it down. An example is at a movie theater. People shouldn't talk at all yet the curse words sometimes fly. Same for shopping centers. And yes people on cell phones speaking in a loud voice offend me also.

Like Phil, it leads me to think of users as uneducated or verbally challenged. It used to be a man thing, now both sexes seem to use profanity on an equal basis.

this thread reminds me of the spongebob squarepants episode Sailor Mouth, where he and Patrick start using "sentence enhancers" .

You use them when you want to talk fancy. You just sprinkle it on anything you say and WHAM-O, you have yourself a spicy sentence sandwich!!!

Got plenty of friends. I'm just able to act the same way to all of them, regardless of how or what they do or say.

I use the same language no matter who I am around. For those people that use it around some people but not others, my question to you is this: Why?

If the language you use is appropriate, then use it. If it's not, then don't use it. Period.

On another note, it really turns me off when a show I'm watching (or movie for that matter) starts using foul language. I find it much more enjoyable when the writers use their brains to write lines instead of using four letter words to fall back on. (or hyphenated words for that matter)

I don't really cuss much, unless I am mad.
I never use the Lord's name in vain though....and if I throw out the "F-Bomb" you can be sure I am pretty mad.

I used to cuss all the time, but I RARELY do now. Sometimes them words still slip out on occasion when I'm really angry, but I definitely try not to. I honestly don't see a reason where cussing is necessary, though, especially in everyday conversation. I definitely have NEVER been one to use the Lord's name in vain!

Evidently the end effect has not been to cut down on profanity! Was that the original intent?

I've been known to curse a time or two when I get mad. It really pisses me off when I do that.:D

There isn't really any excuse to do it in normal conversations. The English language is so diverse, there are multiple ways to express the same thing using different words. I used to call people on it, but gave up doing that because it doesn't usually change anything.

In my business, I have found a few people that you can't communicate with without using it. Sad but true. If you never have to deal with such people you are lucky. Typically they tend to be poorly educated and angry at the time. :(
