There is alot of talk about the Sweetwater/Snyder rivalry. But
when I was in high school Monahans was out biggest rival. I've
spoken to a former Snyder coach and he said when he coached
Snyder the Lubbock schools were Snyder's biggest rival.

I was just curious to see how the rivalries have changed over the
years.

Our big rival at the time was Los Fresnos (they were 4A at the time) and the game was called "The Battle of Highway 100."

Sadly, Los Fresnos is now 5A and the last "Battle of Highway 100" was played in 2005.

When I got into HS our rival, Teague, dropped to 2A so I guess we tried move on to Mexia. And then they moved out of our district so Fairfield is currently searching for a rival.

It was Cleburne back in the 80s when I played. (Stephenville was not our rivalry until the 90s because we beat them something like 38 straight games). In 1982 when we played Cleburne in a district game, it was moved to Amon Carter Stadium and there was a reported 25,000 people there.

Before my time (in the 50s, 60s and 70s), it was Breckenridge.

I went to Baytown Sterling and our rival was and will probably always be Baytown Lee (almost always pack Stallworth Stadium for that game, around 15K people)....growing up in Liberty the big rival for them was Barber's Hill, that lasted until Barber's Hill went up to 4a several years back....in that district the Liberty/Barber's Hill game was for the district championship almost every year it seemed and no matter where it was the stadiums would be overflowing....

Same here, Rockdale. However, the Yoemen and Waco Robinson had a couple of battles in 1992 and 1993. Really could have turned into something if they would have stayed in the same district.

When I was in high school, my high school's (Clyde) rival would definitely be A Wylie. Now it might as well be Cisco or Sweetwater since we dont play Wylie anymore.

Sweetwater and Vernon aren't considered rivals. But since the
Lions have knocked the Mustangs out of the playoffs three times this
decade....well....we're really starting to not like ya'll.:D

I graduated from Lampasas.

Our biggest rival was always Burnet, until most of us got wheels, then it became Marble Falls.

I also think all the old rivalry hatred got fused out when most of us went 4A. It just wasn't the same. I'm not sure how it is now though.

Well, WO-S was 5A for 3 of the 4 years I actually attended and I would say our biggest rivals at the time were Beaumont West Brook, the now defunct Port Arthur Thomas Jefferson and Port Neches-Groves.

When we dropped to 4A my senior year, Jasper was the only 4A team we lost to so they would have to be included.

I graduated from Brownwood in 02, so of course it was Stephenville. My sisters graduated in 89 and 95, the one who graduated in 89 has told me stories of Cleburne being the big rival. They really didn't care anything about Stephenville. My sister who graduated in 95 of course it was Stephenville then. My grandmother graduated back in the 40s from Brownwood, and even back then it was Breckenridge. I think it was pretty much Breckenridge from the 30s on up til the 60s/70s until it started transforming in to a rivalry with Cleburne, and ultimately Stephenville. If Wylie and Brownwood both stay 3A, I can see that being our next big rival... then again if Stephenville drops to 3A in another few alignments who knows.

Do you remember when Wheatley defeated my school Dulles in basketball? Game was played at Hofheinz Pavillon, winner got Kashmere, who ended up winning 78 straight games. The Rams were led by Karl Godine & Jarvis Williams. Our team was led by future UH player George Walker. Did you play on that Wheatley team?

I agree that Cleburne has not had too many good football seasons. However, for about five years in the 80s the Yellowjackets had some very good teams. They were coached by a man that wore black clothes. I think his first name was Chuck. They won district in 1982 and the went pretty far in the playoffs. (That district included Brownwood, Stephenville, Joshua, Mansfield, Granbury, Everman and Crowley).

We were indiscriminate when I was in high school. We hated everybody! Of course, we weren't any good at football, so that might explain it.:D Take your pick: Mt. Pleasant, Sulphur Springs, Gladewater, Daingerfield. My junior year, Mt. Pleasant was ranked #9 in the state, we were 0-8 on the year, and we went to their house and beat them 20-8, our only win that year. As our buses were leaving, they pelted the buses with bottles and rocks. One girl in our band got hit in the head, and required an overnight stay at the hospital along with a bunch of stitches. That's one story that really sticks out in my mind.

Back in 1969, Sweetwater and Lubbock Estacado were in the same district. Lubbock Estacado was ranked #1 in the AP Poll and Sweetwater was ranked #2.

They played their district game in Sweetwater on a pleasant friday night in November. It was a war. A battle for the ages. After the game, many players and coaches said Sweetwater was the toughest game they played in en route to thier state championship season.

The final score of that famous game between Lubbock Estacado and Sweetwater?

Estacado 7
Sweetwater 0

That team will forever hold the title of the very best Sweetwater team to have NOT won district.

Hillsboro. I remember the summer of my junior year some football players from Hillsboro came to West to a festival on Labor Day weekend, talking smack to us about how they couldn't wait to kick our a%$. It comes down to the night of the game and they are still talking smack during pregame. We were up 14-7 at the half and scored a quick TD early in the 3rd to go up 21-7, only to end up losing 28-21. It still makes me sick to this day when I think of that game.
