The University Interscholastic League will announce later today that all high school athletics in the state of Texas will be allowed to resume this weekend, Hidalgo athletic director Albert Guerra said Wednesday.

Guerra was informed by the UIL of the decision just after lunch Wednesday, he said

Last Wednesday due to concerns over the swine flu outbreak, the UIL postponed all athletics until May 11.

At the time the UIL canceled the regional track & field meets across the state and pushed back the start date of the baseball and softball playoffs. The next day the UIL reversed directions on the regional track meets, giving regions a 10-day window to complete the regional meets. With that move, the state track & field meet was pushed back until June 5 and 6 in Austin.

The UIL's decision Wednesday now means baseball teams across the Rio Grande Valley will play their final regular season games this weekend, and softball teams must have their bi-district games played by May 12.

The official UIL news release will be posted here when it's released later today.

For Softball (and probally track and baseball) It's at the point now that it really does not matter except for may a practice game. I doubt they change the scheduled dates for games to be played so who really cares. They made a decision and have now changed their minds twice. Every decision has been ... well lets just say not so smart! Now wonder our kids are struggling, our leaders are setting this type of example

A lot of this is our own fault as a society. No person of responsibility will run the risk of making any decision which can potentially place their judgment or the judgment of their employer in liability. Thank the media and our litigious prone society and unscrupulous lawyers for that. Still, I agree it is a maddening no-win situation for anyone involved.

Atleast teams can get their district games over with and know the playoff seedings and matchups

The recommendation to not close schools did not come down until Tuesday.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

AUSTIN, TX— UIL interscholastic competitions may resume on
Thursday May 7, the UIL announced Wednesday. Based on Texas
Education Agency and Department of State Health Services
recommendations that all schools across the state of Texas reopen, the
UIL has relaxed its suspension of all interscholastic competitions,
which were originally slated to resume May 11.

“The UIL has made every attempt at rescheduling all events to promote
the best possible scenario for competition,” said UIL Executive
Director Dr. Charles Breithaupt. “By allowing interscholastic
competitions to resume on May 7, it will provide those student-athletes
an opportunity to compete in a more comparable manner to the original
schedule.”

Because of the magnitude and scope of the regional track meets and the
academic state meet, there is no change to the tentative schedules of
those events released last week.

The modified softball and baseball playoff schedules follow.
Softball
District Certification: April 28
Bi-District Deadline: May 12 (1 game or 2 out of 3)
Area Deadline: May 16 (1 game or 2 out of 3)
Regional Quarterfinal Deadline: May 19 (1 game only)
Regional Semifinal Deadline: May 23 (1 game or 2 out of 3)
Regional Final Deadline: May 30 (1 game or 2 out of 3)
State Tournament: June 4-6

Baseball
District Certification: May 12*
Bi-District Deadline: May 16 (1 game or 2 out of 3)
Area Deadline: May 19 (1 game only)
Regional Quarterfinal Deadline: May 23 (1 game or 2 out of 3)
Regional Semifinal Deadline: May 30 (1 game or 2 out of 3)
Regional Final Deadline: June 6 (1 game or 2 out of 3)
State Tournament: June 10-13
*If tie-breaking games are needed to determine advancement to the
playoffs, this deadline could be extended to May 13.

I think it sucks that the district winners have no choice but to play one game when their competition will have had option of playing two or three games. It's especially bad after having to lay off this long.

I totally agree...Bi-district rounds should have been 1 game and the Area round on should have had the option of 1 or 3. ..2nd and 3rd place teams can possibly all have one good pitcher and not a very good 2 or 3.

District Cert could have been the 8th and Bi-district the 12th with a mandatory 1 game and Area round could have be 16th with the option and Regional Quarters the next weekend...

I have no problem with one game if we'd been playing all along. But to lay off this long then let it hinge on one game is not right. It would be more fair if it was one game all the way through.
