Looking into the pros and cons of young kids wearing the knee braces during games and practices. I am talking about kids who do not have any previous knee issues. Does anyone recommend the braces or should you steer away from them?

If you can afford them, wear them. Not many schools will by them.

IMO....

Wear them....tore my left acl in 10th grade 2 adays without them, wore a very cheap version and played on it the rest of the year until Electra of 1985 broke my right knee/femur right above the ball joint.....next year coaches bought the new style brace for the whole team...I never took them off my Jr. and Sr. year, never hurt my knees again.:)

Every varsity lineman offense/defense had to wear knee braces no matter what...wish that would have extended to linebackers. :(

Anyone got a particlular type to recommend because I know the school is not going to put out the money for them and want to narrow down the type to look for to buy

If you do buy some buy DonJoy (http://www.donjoy.com/index.asp/fuseaction/products.list/cat/1/page/1) they are the best and what we use up at UT.

Which type of Donjoy do you all wear at UT because if I am going to spend the money for this I want to make sure I am buying the right thing.

thanks for all the input from everyone.

I am a believer! We inherited pair of Air Armour braces from a graduating senior in 07. We were fortunate that my son is very tall for an 8th grader and therefore could were the braces immediately. He wore them this past 8th grade season and this winter for select.

The following picture is from a few weeks ago on his select team. He is always double teamed and chopped or cut often. He has very long limbs and most kids his age attempt to cut him.

In the bottom picture you can see the braces. They replace the thigh pad and wrap around the outside of the thigh with a single hinge. The Air Armours are carbon fiber and very light.

If you have a tall interior lineman they are worth their weight in gold. He has told me on more than one occasion that they have saved him.

We use the Defiance III which are pretty expensive but, they are custom made for each person and fit extremely well. For my first spring I had the Armor DonJoy and it was fine. It didn't fit as well since it wasen't custom made but it seemed like it worked just fine and it is quite a bit cheaper.
