soooo, I think we've exhausted the Swine Flu discussion for the time being - so anyone want to share what their district times/distances (field events) were? Just trying to change it up a bit :p

you know the track coaches are scrambling trying to figure out if they get to advance to state.

i feel bad for all the kids, but i especially feel bad for the seniors that won't get their last shot at realizing their dream at a shot at state. :(

 When I was in high school, we only had one or two guys in our district that ran sub 5s...in fact, one of our guys advanced to regional with a 5:05 or something around there. Two guys around the 4:30 mark? That's pretty impressive.

The boy from Cuero is a Sophomore (I think) He and the Jamie boy from Gonzales are usually neck and neck in their races. I might be mistaken but I think at district is the 1st time Hansel beat Jamie. I hope they both qualify for State.. I have no idea what other times have been turned in statewise though.. Cuero is usually associated with "sprint speed" not distance speed, but I think there were 6 JV runners in the Mile and 3200 M runs. That's good to see :)

I just did a little research, and it looks like times around 4:30 are what usually qualify for state...it looks like my district was a bit slower than a lot of districts back when I was running.

Drew Seale was state runner-up last year but isn't getting to this year because he was 5th in region, and I know he would at least place at the state meat. I mean really we need 16 people to stop the progression of these people's lives?

CueroDad08

This could be a bad thing for Cuero
The relays times in distric were not the best they have run this year. They pulled up with the large leads and were not being pushed much at all. Hope the times are still in top 4 to go to state. It would be sad for this group not to show off how fast they are.
Cuero was really looking forward to winning state for the 4th time in 5 years.

Hansel is really coming on in the shorter race. He barely broke 5 minutes as a freshman. He won district in Cross Country this year and now him and Jorge Jaime have been duking it out at every meet they ran against each other. Jaime can run all day long at his comfort speed. That is evidenced by his 3200 time. He will go in the 9:50's at state. Buster Hansel will get down in the 4:20's at state and there is no telling how he will do as a junior and senior. He is built like a runner and not even maturing as a runner yet. He could have 4:10 in his high school future.

I do not see how you can say that the 8 fastest times advance. Track conditions, wind, and the competiton you face all play a factor in the outcome. The will of the athlete to just not be beat. I have seen all that before. Everybody that qualified for regionals should be able to compete at state.

crabman
04-29-2009, 10:45 PM
The 16 fastest plus ties will advance. Four from each of the four regions.

High jump may get a little squirrely. You might have 20-25 qualifiers when you count ties.

I just do not see how you can take the top 4 times. there are to many variables to make that fair. We are even talking about high or low humidity, cool or hot weather, wether you started or finished with the prevaling wind. You can go on and on. Each District meet was differant.

Yeah, once upon a time the UIL decided there should be equal representation from each region. There will always be people with arguments about their performances because of different conditions.

All I am saying is to take all the Region Qualifiers and run the appropriate # of heats in the same location and then you will have you true State Champion.

Everybody would need to run the same track in the same conditions. As you already said on one of these threads, Texas is a big state. So they got to do what they got to do.

Just so I get you right. You believew that a region 4 district meet run in central Tx with low humidity and light winds can compare to a region 4 district meet on the southeast part of tx with high humidity and high winds. You believe that thier times will compare faverably with each other.

I think sometimes people are forced to make tough decisions. I don't think anyone believes the decision made is the "best" way to "qualify" contestants for state under normal circumstances but we are not dealing with normal circumstances. Sure we can all say there should be regional meets, but that is out of our hands. Will some miss out on opportunities because of this decision? Absolutely! However, it is looking more and more like the outcry has been heard and the UIL will do what it can to reschedule regional meets as well as the state meet if possible.

I know we can only do what we can do, and I hope that everything turns out okay for everyone involved in this situation. Of course I would like a level playing field for everybody concerned, but that is not what always happens. I regret the circumstances that cause this situation, and hope that everything can be rectified to everyones satisfaction. I just hate seeing asterisk next to the champions name because of these events.
