AUSTIN — Texas officials are postponing all high school athletic competition until May 11 because of the swine flu outbreak.

The move suspends the baseball season and eliminates the regional track championships, said University Interscholastic League Executive Director Charles Breithaupt. He said UIL officials acted on the recommendation of public health officials.

The state golf and tennis championships are scheduled to begin May 11.

The state track meet, one of the largest high school track and field competitions in the country, remains scheduled for May 13-14. But it will require shuffling the schedule significantly.

All UIL academic competitions are postponed as well.

Track:
Regional Track Meets
All UIL regional track meets originally scheduled for this weekend, May 1-2, have been cancelled. The state track and field meet will be extended to a three-day format to include semifinal heats. The meet is tentatively scheduled for Thursday, Friday and Saturday, May 14-16.

Softball - Everything will have to be reflipped! I don't believe a school can be forced to play before Wednesday, so it will conflict with...

So technically, a district track champion who won the event easily and was not pushed, could miss the state meet? Hmmm.
Oh well, at least the "virus" doesn't affect the TAKS.

crabman
04-29-2009, 01:31 PM
Almost. Round up the hand held time to the next slowest tenth of a second and then add 0.14 for races 300 meters and over and add 0.24 for races under 300 meters.

15.56 100 meter hurdles rounds up to 15.6+0.24=15.84

42.11 4x100 rounds up to 42.2+0.14=42.34

I don't know of any 3A district meets that were automatically timed. Even if their results were published in hundredths of a second I would be the races were hand held.

Oh I'm not throwing a fit over high school baseball, softball and track games/meets. My beef is with just the media in general, because they are blowing it up..the UIL feels pressured to make decisions like these. Obviously cancelling these games wont hurt anything, it'll only help. I just think that there is no reason to really even be talking about the swine flu, its just a slightly different strand of the flu that's not affecting large numbers of people in the U.S at all.

IF it gets to the point where large amounts of schools are cancelling, I agree with you. They'd prolly just cancel all sports and maybe even school for the rest of the year. TAK's is over..there isn't much else to go to school for.

I am starting to feel achey and my throat hurts - I think I am going to put myself in a 10 day quarantine.. just to be safe....;)

Keep in mind that this decision solves the problem of the San Antonio-area districts that closed schools until May 11 due to 3 confirmed cases in that area. I think it is no coincidence that the delay to May 11 is to allow those districts not to lose out on the opportunity to compete (which is great for them). I think this is really the primary reason for the delay. It doesn't hurt to say that it is being done for safety's sake. Note that TAPPS did not make the same decision, but, then again, they may not have had the same issues or could deal with it with less trouble.

That is one good thing I have to say about Greenwood....they always try and schedule prom before any of the playoffs/track finals/etc. start!
