on page 16 of this weeks SI it talks about Leander's AD wanting to change the name of their athletic facility, Tumbleweed Hill Stadium, because he is afraid students might make jokes about marijuana.

Adios, 'Weed Hill'; maybe they'll like 'Bong Bowl' better
Tumbleweed Hill named for old cowboy steakhouse.

Well, so much for making Big Chief Smokafatwun the team mascot.

Still, the Leander school district is backing off a statement from School Board President Don McCall about the naming of the new 5,000-seat high school football stadium being built on Tumbleweed Hill near RM 2222.

In a story in this newspaper's Wednesday edition, McCall was quoted as saying that the Leander school trustees had ditched the name Tumbleweed Hill Stadium because it was possible "the kids are going to say, Tumbleweed Hill — oh, that's marijuana."

And forget about Cheech and Chong Stadium, Buzz Ballpark or Munchies Memorial.

What's funny about this is that tumbleweed isn't dope. It's a term for several nuisance desert plants with shallow roots that roll around in the wind after they croak.

"None of those things have anything to do with pot," said Jim Manhart, an associate professor of biology at Texas A&M. "These are people who have too much time on their hands, if they worry about stuff like that."

Besides, Tumbleweed Hill is named after the Texas Tumbleweed, a cowboy steakhouse on Tumbleweed Hill that closed in the '80s. So the kids would more likely say, "Tumbleweed Hill — that's a ribeye and a baked potato."

Either way, Dick Ellis, communications director for the Leander school district, says the possibility of youthful pot jokes isn't the reason the school decided not to name the stadium after tumbleweeds. He said the district wanted more public input.

"I talked to Don (McCall) this morning," Ellis said Wednesday. "And he said that he just kinda said something like that in passing. I know that is not the reason the stadium was named, and then de-named."

Anyway, Tumbleweed Hill Stadium is outta there for the new stadium. Other names that have been bandied about are Freedom Field, Ribelin Ranch (after a business park by the same name) and Four Points.

Freedom Field has been overworked — remember those silly Freedom Fries? Ribelin Ranch and Four Points come with their own baggage. The kids would soon be calling it Ritalin Ranch. And Four Points would be known as Four Joints in short order.

Meanwhile, the public has been asked to help come up with a name for the stadium. On Thursday night folks were invited to submit ideas at River Place Elementary near Steiner Ranch. And Tuesday there will be a similar meeting at 7 p.m. at Henry Middle School in Cedar Park. "We're going to collect all the names that are submitted and give them to the board on the 16th," Ellis said.

As long as no one suggests Bong Bowl or Reefer Stadium.

People need to lighten up on these things, OK? What difference does it make if the kids make a few jokes in the first place? It's not like joking leads to other things, like a low-paying career in standup comedy.
