any news from the Sweeny Track meet?
I only heard a couple of results but nothing "concrete". Heard Cuero won the sprint relay with a 42.6 - might be off on that time a bit
also heard Cuero won the "fat man relay" but not sure who the "fat men" were lol......... hoping Pancho signs on and updates up soon;)

thanks jackets............ Cuero won the Mile Relay?? wow - I am impressed...... I'll have to go back and look at past years times, but 3:25 seems like a pretty good time (for Cuero anyway) I hate to ask but do you know how Isaiah Glover did in his field events? He is so fun to watch

****I checked on the mile relay - Cuero ran 3:23 and 3:22 at state in 05 and 07 - but 3:18 or so usually wins it..

we're about 1 sec behind on the sprint (41.34) and
about 3 secs on the 800 Meter Relay (1.26.72)

right on target.. way to go guys

thank you so much Jackets... It is so frustrating not being able to find track and field results. I appreciate you getting these results :)

FYI Brent and Isaiah (Johnson and Glover) signed with A&M Kingsville this week on track scholarships, 2007 grad Domingo Ruiz is already there and running in track meets. Domingo was on 2 of the relays that won at state in 06 and 07 (I think both years) either way - Kingsville is giving these boys an opportunity for an education and able to run track ;)

SWEENY — Defending state champion Cuero showed the rest of the field Friday at the 47th annual Doug Reid Relays why it might be the favorite to claim the Class 3A state track title again this year.

The Gobblers gobbled up the rest of the field, amassing 163.5 points to capture the boys division over host Sweeny (117.5), with La Marque (96.5) and Columbia (74) closing out the strong field.

In the girls division, the Lady Gobblers proved to be equally worthy of the championship trophy, reeling off 102 points to nip Needville (98) and Columbia (79).

If it was any consolation, Sweeny did manage to capture the junior varsity boys division with 177 points, while the Gobblers closed out second with 102 points.

“I thought the meet went very well,” Sweeny coach Marty VanDyke said. “We knew Cuero was very good, and they showed us how good they are. But I was proud of the way our kids performed. We are continuing to show improvement and we should be ready for the district (26-3A) meet in two weeks.”

Cuero coach Victor Mathis was impressed with this year’s field. “This is my first year here and I was very impressed with the way the meet was run,” he said. “This was a tough test for our kids, but winning both divisions makes our long drive home a lot better one.

“Barring any injuries, I think we at least have a shot at repeating, but we will see,” Mathis said. “And I am sure we will be seeing a lot of these Sweeny kids at regional.”

Sweeny’s Preston Woodard started out his impressive day in the morning with a second-place finish in the high jump with a leap of 6 foot 2 inches, while Terrell Bedford got the Bulldogs off to a great start by winning the shot put event with a heave of 46-10. Columbia’s Aaron Boucher was third in the discus, while Roughneck Christian Gerbich set a school record in winning the pole vault with a jump of 13-7. Columbia’s Dexter Lewis was third in that event.

Woodard came back to a personal best in the triple jump with a leap of 45 feet, while Sweeny freshman Ken Woodard closed out in third in the 3,200-meter run.

The Gobblers nipped the Bulldogs in the 400-meter relay with a time of 42.31 to 42.46 for the ’Necks before Woodard came back to grab the 110-hurdles with a crisp time of 14.9.

Columbia’s Logan Hernandez gave the Roughneck faithful something to smile about with a first-place finish in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.69, edging out teammate Jared McNeil and Sweeny’s Jamel Woodard.

Cuero whipped out relay victories in the 800-meter event and the 1,600-meter finale, with the Roughnecks grabbing second in the 800-meter event.

Sweeny’s versatile Woodard grabbed a third-place ribbon in the 300-intermediate hurdles while Gavin Brown snared the gold in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.19.

In the girls division, Columbia’s Whitney Flannel snapped up the high jump title with a leap of 5-4 while teammate Ebony Washington won the gold in the long jump by going 17-71⁄2. Sweeny’s Sherlyn Layman snared the discus gold with a school record toss of 122-4, while Jackie Franklin snapped up a second-place ribbon in the shot put with a toss of 36-23⁄4.

Columbia won the 400-meter relay title with a dandy time of 51.76, nipping rival Sweeny at the wire.

In one of the most heated battles of the night, Sweeny’s C. Laday nipped Columbia’s Washington in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.31. Washington clocked out with a time of 26.95.

Sweeny and Columbia will both participate in the Roughneck Relays in West Columbia next Thursday.

“It should be another good meet,” VanDyke said.

“Another good tuneup for our district meet in two weeks.”
