Some of the statements are bogus, but it is true about the DOT # and the date. I work at Discount Tire and we don't service tires older than 10 years and we don't sell them if they are too old. Our stock is circulated a lot so we never have 'old turtles' ,as we call them, in the inventory.

Another thing is that a few month old tires can do the same thing those do. Separate. It is really the brand of tire that you buy. don't go buy the cheapest tire because they will perform/last as long as the cost.
