Sinton baseball surges ahead of Robstown in district
Pirates' Rodriguez holds Pickers to five hits in 31-3A victory

SINTON — When Robstown High School’s Ruben Elizondo launched the first pitch over the wall in left-center field aided by a gale-like wind, it seemed Friday’s anticipated District 31-3A showdown with Sinton would turn into a slugfest.

That hardly turned out to be the case.

The Pirates pieced together three multiple-run innings and the fourth-ranked Cotton Pickers managed just four hits over the final six innings off Sinton’s Josh Rodriguez. Despite the blustery conditions brought in by Friday’s cold front, Sinton exited its diamond with sole possession of the district lead with an 8-1 thumping of the Cotton Pickers.

“Our ballpark plays big because the wind always blows into the face of the hitters. It’s very strange for that to happen at this time of the year,” said coach Gene Kasprzyk, whose Pirates improved to 4-0 in district and 12-7 overall. “We talked about it before the game with our team. If we get up two or three or down two or three with the ballpark playing the way it is, anything could happen. And boom, I think the first pitch out of the box he just rips it out of the park.

“But I think we had already established that fact with the kids, so I don’t think it affected them too much,” Kasprzyk said. “And then Josh did a good job of settling down and getting the next three hitters, and we were able to come up in the bottom of the inning and put a couple of digits up on the board and everything kind of settled down.”

Rodriguez (3-1) limited Robstown to five hits, striking out eight in just his fourth start since the end of basketball season. He threw 105 pitches, 68 for strikes.

“We knew the pitcher’s good. He did his job. He kept us off balance,” said coach Steve Castro, whose Cotton Pickers fell to 3-1 in district and 13-5-1 overall. “What can you say? They just outplayed us today and it’s one of those games. We still have 10 games to go and you just have to accept defeat like a winner does and get ready for next week.”

Rodriguez helped his cause at the plate as well with a 4-for-4 effort and three runs batted in. His RBI double and Shane Segovia’s RBI single erased Robstown’s 1-0 lead following Elizondo’s home run.

Sinton padded the lead off Robstown sophomore Michael Velasquez in the fourth, chasing the left-hander in the process. A fielder’s choice and a walk set the stage for Rodriguez, who cracked a double off the left-field wall for a 4-1 lead. A wild pitch from reliever Alex Marroquin boosted Sinton’s lead to 5-1.

The Pirates, who stranded 11 runners, put away the game with three runs in the sixth off Randy Flores. An error and Chris Garcia’s two-run double accounted for the final margin.

Meanwhile, the Cotton Pickers managed two second-inning singles. They didn’t collect a hit again until Felipe Rios’ two-out single in the sixth.

“We’re still young and I saw it today. ... We’ve just got to go back and keep on going. That’s baseball,” Castro said. “This one’s out of the way, let’s think about them next time at home and hopefully we’ll be in the same position. Winners always accept defeat and learn from that.”

Robstown loaded the bases in the seventh on a walk, Elizondo’s infield single and an error, but left the bags full.

“He was over 90 pitches and we were trying to be careful. We were going to stop at 90 but he said he was OK,” Kasprzyk said of Rodriguez. “So I don’t know if he got to 100 but it was a little more than we’d have liked him to have gone. It’s the most he’s thrown all year. ... But you have to be happy about the outcome tonight. That’s a very good baseball team. When you can beat those guys it gives you an advantage in the district race. But there’s a long way to go.”
