I can remember as a little boy people coming to town (Cuero) in the very early 60's on horse and mule wagons. North railroad street is where they parked them just off west main. Saturdays had a big carnival atmosphere as all the farmers and ranchers came to town.

All the stores downtown were open and enjoyed going to movies for under $1 and going to five and dime stores

I remember riding on my uncle's wagon going to the Jone's Grocery on the edge of town (Gilmer), or to H.E. Allen Grocery near downtown. I rode quite a few times, up until 1969 when he died. It was a real adventure for a young lad getting to ride on a wagon. That was before the days of Walmart, when five and dime stores, and "Mom and Pop" stores were prevalent. I sure miss them days.:dispntd: Danged Walmart!
