So I was at school today and my students got into this huge debate on whether the word is spelled: P'wned or pwned...

i know this is a stupid post, but it got me to wondering what is the correct spelling...whats your take

it's pwned

it came from a misspelling of owned.

What did they think the ' was taking the place of in p'wned?

A corruption of the word "Owned." This originated in an online game called Warcraft, where a map designer misspelled "owned." When the computer beat a player, it was supposed to say, so-and-so "has been owned."

Instead, it said, so-and-so "has been pwned."

It's "pwned". As for it's origin I'm not 100% sure, although I can assume that it was originally a typo and insted of "owned" it was typed "pwned".

*edit* Oh, someone from WoW did that? I wouldn't know, I'm an FFXI guy and it was from there that I learned of "pwned"

I've also heard that "pwned" is one level beyond being owned, because P is the next letter in the alphabet.

How do you pronounce it?
