Permian assistant head football coach Ted Willmann confirmed Monday that he has applied for the Panthers' open head football coach and campus athletic coordinator position.

Willmann, who has served as the assistant head coach under former head coach Darren Allman for the past four years, also presided over a Permian offensive line that produced three players-left tackle Garrett Porter, right tackle Margarito Vasquez and center Austin O'Connell-who received All-State mention last year.

Porter is a two-time All-State First team member.

"People who help to create something want to be able to defend it," Willmann said. "It's not about stature, it's not about anything else, it's about keeping these kids moving in the right direction."

Five other coaches have already applied for the position.

They are:

1. Steven Freeman, Brownwood head coach, 1995-2008

2. Dave Meadows, DeSoto athletic director, head football coach from 2001-2007

3. Coy Brown, Keller Fossil Ridge assistant coach

4. Timothy Smith, San Dieguito Union head coach (Carlsbad, Calif.), from 1994-present

5. Scott Farley, Leslie (Mich.) head coach, 1995-present

Out of the five listed I would hire Coy Brown out of Keller Fossil Ridge

Freeman would be a great fit at this job. Knows how to coach in a tradition rich program, and is a proven winner. Seems to get the kids behind him and is well-liked in the profession. With the talent there, he could be type coach that brings out the best in the MOJO.

Flower Mound Marcus head football coach Bryan Erwin is in Odessa today. Although Erwin has not submitted an application for the Permian High head football position, he is touring the school and Odessa today. Former Permian coach Darren Allman resigned last week to take the coaching job at Austin Westlake.

ECISD officials have indicated they hope for a quick search process for a new coach, but have not put a time frame on filling the high profile job.
