Wharton Invitational Baseball Tournament celebrating its 50th anniversary

When the umpire screams, "Play ball," at noon Thursday at Tiger Field, it will mark the start of a historic event.

At that time, the 50th Annual Wharton Invitational Baseball Tournament will start the first three first-day games.

"It's a big tournament, and we have some good teams coming in," said Wharton first year head baseball coach Kelly Kerlin. "Anytime that there's something going on for 50 years, its a tribute to the town, the program and to the community.

"Any time you have a chance to come home and play in front of a home crowd, it's a big deal. Hopefully there will be a lot of people in the stands and it will be a big-time environment."

Bay City takes on Brazosport in the opener. El Campo battles Bellville at 3 p.m., and host Wharton takes on Cypress Springs at 6 p.m.

"Bellville is state-ranked, and anytime El Campo comes to town is a big deal," Kerlin said. "Brazosport is a good 4A school, and Bay City is a traditional power in the area."

The Tigers entered Tuesday's road game against county rival Boling with a perfect 5-0 record.

Friday's games are also scheduled to start at noon. El Campo plays Cypress Springs in the first game. Bay City plays Bellville at 2 p.m., and Wharton takes on Brazosport at 6 p.m.

Bay City plays Cypress Springs at noon on Saturday. El Campo plays Brazosport at 3 p.m.., and Wharton plays Bellville at 6 p.m.

The team with the best record wins the tournament.

There is an eight-run rule after five innings.

El Campo's pitcher kept our hitters off balance the whole game. Bellville's defense still needs to improve. One of those games where they just never got going. It's early and there are lots more games to play.
