It hasn't been posted on the texasfootball.com web site yet, but I have it on very good authority that the

SINTON PIRATES

are this year's US Army Strong 3A Team of the Year! :)

We are all proud of what our boys & coaches accomplished this year and I'm glad someone else took notice.

In this case, I would think going from 1-9 to 11-1 was it.

Congrats!

Sinton Pirates Named
Army Strong Team of the Year
by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football

Sinton, Texas - February 10, 2009 – Dave Campbell’s Texas Football is proud to announce that the Sinton Pirates of Sinton have been named the Army Strong Team of the Year for the 3A Division.

The Pirates were chosen for this honor because of their teamwork, dedication, discipline, personal courage and integrity throughout the 2008 football season, values shared by U.S. Army Soldiers.

“Sinton gave the state one of the largest single-season turnaround performances in recent memory,” said Adam Hochfelder, general manager of Dave Campbell's Texas Football. “Their jump from a 1-9 record in 2007 to an 11-1 record in 2008 stunned South Texas and sent them to the third round of the playoffs.”

The award will be presented to the team at a time to be determined later this year by a representative of the U.S. Army and a representative of Dave Campbell’s Texas Football.

“The U.S. Army is recognizing the student-athletes at Sinton High School for demonstrating qualities similar to those exhibited by an Army Soldier, who is mentally, emotionally and physically strong,” said Captain Jose Garcia. “We expect to see some of these young individuals competing at the college level, or maybe even professionally in the future.”

Football players and Soldiers share similar values, such as teamwork, dedication, discipline and loyalty.

The Bowl showcases 90 elite high school athletes, many of whom will go on to play at the collegiate and professional levels. In its ninth year, the 2009 U.S. Army All-American Bowl also featured the U.S. Army All-American Band, comprised of the best high school musicians from across the country. Save a stint with the U.S. Army 14th Armored Division in France and Germany during World War II, Campbell spent 51 years as a member of the editorial staff at the Waco Tribune-Herald. Hired by the newspaper in 1942, Campbell became sports editor in 1953 and held that position until his retirement in 1993. The list of accolades and honors Campbell has received stretches as long as his career. Along with winning the Bronze Star for heroic achievement during World War II, Campbell has been presented the Bert McGrane Award and the Jake Wade Award, the highest honors given by the Football Writers' Association of America and the College Sports Information Directors of America, respectively.
