Some notables from the San Antonio Express in todays paper(2-6-09 from MYSA.com):
.
By Dan McCarney - Express-News With the help of state recruiting analyst Randy Rodgers, Express-News football beat writer Dan McCarney takes a look at a handful of area prospects who could form the backbone of next year's class, as well as a list of state recruits who already do.

Nate Askew
Madison WR
Size: 6-3, 195
The rundown: Blessed with great size and hands, Askew made numerous highlight catches last season, including a jaw-dropper against Reagan in which he leapt high to snare an overthrown ball with one hand. The biggest question is speed. “He's a kid who needs to be able to post some track times so you know exactly how fast he is,” Rodgers said. “Combines will be a determining factor.”

Gabe Baker
MacArthur S
Size: 6-0, 185
The rundown: Despite the presence of such major recruits as Madison's Andrew Green and Reagan's LeQuince McCall, at least one 26-5A coach considered Baker the best defensive back in the district last season. An added bonus — according to Rodgers, Baker is also a top-flight student, which will only make him more attractive to college recruiters.

John Bordano
New Braunfels LB
Size: 6-2, 210
The rundown: Several District 26-5A coaches preferred Bordano to ex-teammate Tom Wort, a recent Oklahoma signee and the 2007 Express-News Area Defensive Player of the Year. He's at least got a similar nose for the football, as he showed by recording 98 tackles and six sacks as a junior. Primed to move back to his customary spot inside, he's already received an offer from SMU.

Kris Catlin
Madison LB
Size: 6-3, 220
The rundown: From a physical standpoint, few players can compare with Catlin in terms of size and athletic ability. Indeed, it's saying something that he's one of the more impressive specimens of Madison's recent run of college prospects. One quibble — you wish he was able to parlay all that talent into more big plays, but perhaps that should improve with more experience.

Stanley Harris
Clemens ATH
Size: 6-3, 180
The rundown: Quarterback, tailback, defensive back, kick returner — pick a spot, and Harris likely will see extensive time there next season as Buffaloes coach Greg Ferrara seeks to take full advantage of his most versatile playmaker. Not the tailback ex-Buff James Henry was, he's a better overall athlete according to Ferrara. “He's not going to come off the field very much,” he said.

Dominic Henderson
Roosevelt DT
Size: 6-3, 280
The rundown: With solid grades, great size and experience at every position on the defensive line, Henderson should get plenty of looks. Rodgers praises his potential but cautions against Henderson's inconsistency — a common shortcoming among big linemen. Otherwise, he said, “Dominic's got the kind of size and measurables you're looking for.”

Cole Hubble
Bandera QB
Size: 6-1, 200
The rundown: Had a productive junior season, passing for 2,091 yards and rushing for 1,591 to lead the area in total offense. With neither Rodgers nor the recruiting services having made their assessment yet, it's difficult to know exactly where Hubble stands at the moment. But with the glut of spread offenses in college football, you'd imagine he'll get plenty of looks.

Chris Johnson
East Central RB
Size: 5-9, 200
The rundown: Despite not having an abundance of talent around him, Johnson rushed for more than 3,200 yards over the past two seasons. More than the numbers, his combination of power and breakaway speed leads Rodgers to rate him as the area's best overall prospect and one of the top running backs in the state. “He's got home run speed, and that's what people really like about him,” he said.

Sheldon McLain
Steele WR
Size: 6-2, 185
The rundown: Overshadowed early on by the exploits of teammate Malcolm Brown — who should be a hot prospect himself when the time comes — McLain got better with more opportunities once Steele's star back went down with an injury. Rodgers expects Big 12-type offers for this tall, strong receiver with legitimate track speed and excellent moxie as a blocker.

Torrea Peterson
East Central DT
Size: 6-4, 305
The rundown: Already having received an offer from the likes of Oklahoma, more will certainly follow. “He's going to be one of the most heavily recruited linemen in the country,” Hornets coach Robert Walker said. Rodgers loves his potential but would like to see more consistent effort, an assessment Peterson seconds. “I know I'm not there yet,” he said, “but I'm working hard to get there.”

Texas' 10 to watch

Tyler Arndt: Cuero, QB (6-4, 210). ... Big, strong-armed pocket passer already has started for two seasons.

Carrington Byndom: Lufkin, DB (6-0, 170). ... The latest elite prospect from one of the richest talent pools in Texas.

Aleon Calhoun: Navasota, OL (6-7, 315). ... Has everything you're looking for in terms of size, wingspan and quickness.

James Haynes: West Orange-Stark, ATH (6-1, 180). ... Versatility and freakish athletic ability will make him a coveted prospect.

Jackson Jeffcoat: Plano West, DE (6-5, 230). ... Dominating pass rusher takes after his dad, former Cowboy Jim Jeffcoat.

Shaun Lewis: Fort Bend Hightower, LB (6-1, 200). ... Rodgers calls him “the most explosive big-play guy in the state of Texas.”

Jake Matthews: Fort Bend Elkins, OL (6-5, 275). ... Another NFL legacy — father was former Oilers/Titans great Bruce Matthews.

Corey Nelson: Dallas Skyline, LB (6-0, 210). ... Counts LSU, Oklahoma and Texas A&M among his early suitors.

Lache Seastrunk: Temple, RB (5-10, 185). ... Already has committed to play in next year's U.S. Army All-American Bowl.

Reggie Wilson: Haltom City, DE (6-4, 240). ... With the possible exception of Lewis, could be the state's top defensive prospect.
