>> SIX PERMIAN FOOTBALL PLAYERS SET TO SIGN:

Six Permian seniors are expected to commit to play football in college as part of National Signing Day today, an event Permian will celebrate at 8 a.m. in the Permian library.

As expected, left tackle Garrett Porter is expected to honor a verbal commitment he made last spring to play at Texas.

Running back Sherard Ray is expected to join 2008 graduate Melvis Pride, and quarterback Trevor Adams is expected to sign with Division II power Northwest Missouri State.

Defensive end William Ritter will probably sign with Western Illinois, and both Ryan Rumbaugh, a wide receiver, and Joey Mendez, a linebacker, are expected to leave in tandem for Eastern New Mexico.

>> PERMIAN SOCCER SENDING FIVE TO COLLEGE:

Five Permian High School soccer players are scheduled to sign college letters of intent at 8 a.m. today in the Permian library.

Two senior four-year starting defenders - Cooper Barham from the Permian boys team and Haley Fowler from the Permian girls team - are signing with NCAA Division I programs.

Barham is heading to George Mason University in Fairfax, Va. George Mason was nationally ranked last season and won the Colonial Athletic Association championship.

Fowler has signed to play for Texas Tech, which has enjoyed two solid seasons in the Big 12 under head coach Tom Stone.

Also signing today are three boys players who are headed to UTPB - midfielder Mason Vincent, defender Austin James and goalkeeper Chris Benavides.

>> BRONCHOS HEADING TO CISCO:

Odessa High linemen Ruben Talamantes and Dex Dennard are expected to sign letters of intent at 8:20 a.m. today in the OHS coaches' office to play next season at Cisco Junior College.

Talamantes and Dennard, both three-year varsity members, played on both sides of the line of scrimmage this year, helping the Bronchos to a 9-3 record and the school's first playoff appearance since 1997.

>> LONE RANGER:

Greenwood's Blake McColloch, an All-Permian Basin selection, is scheduled to sign his letter of intent today to play for Texas State.

The 6-foot-5, 235-pound McColloch is the lone Permian Basin area player likely to sign with a college team today, the first day of the college football signing period. Greenwood coach Steve Taylor said McColloch also was offered by the University of Wyoming.

Texas State, in San Marcos, plays in the Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division I-AA) and lost in the first round of the FCS Division I playoffs last season to Montana to cap an 8-5 season. The Bobcats won the Southland Conference title last season.

>> BULLDOGS MOVING ON:

Midland High running back Darius Miller and offensive lineman Robert Montoya are expected to sign letters of intent this afternoon to play college football.

Miller, one of the top backs in West Texas, is expected to sign with West Texas A&M, with Montoya signing with Cisco Junior College in a 2 p.m. ceremony in Conference Room A at Midland High.
