Westlake football coach Derek Long, who has been with the Chaparrals since their glory days of the 1990s, announced his retirement on Thursday.

Long told his players about the decision at school. Long had a record of 54-22 in six seasons with the team. Westlake was 9-5 last season, overcoming a poor early start to go four rounds in the state playoffs before losing to San Antonio Clark 24-21 in the quarterfinals.

Long took over as head coach when Ron Schroeder abruptly resigned before the beginning of the 2003 season. The Chaps made the playoffs in all six of Long’s seasons as head coach. He was an assistant coach with Westlake for 20 years before becoming head coach.

Locally, two other major coaching jobs remain open. The Austin ISD is looking at candidates for the vacant spots at Austin High and Travis.

bet the applicant list for the Eanes Job is way more impressive than for the two AISD jobs.
