Historic Jasper Stadium vandalized

by Steve W Stewart

The historic Jasper Bulldog Stadium, the 7th oldest football stadium in the state of Texas, was vandalized when someone spray painted "OBAMA" on the field sometime Monday night. Maintenance workers used weed eaters to remove the paint down to the dirt, but the image remained very visible on Wednesday.

A report filed by Officer James Payne said he was sent to the stadium on Park Street when workers discovered the painted field, along with a soccer goal that had been leaned up on a field goal cross bar, and a damaged fence. Several cans of spray paint, which is specifically used to paint athletic fields, was stolen from the maintenance building at the stadium.

Police said on Wednesday that the investigation was continuing. Although they do not have a suspect, police said a key piece of evidence was collected at the scene.

Jasper's Bulldog Stadium opened in 1927. Prior to that, Jasper played football games on the old grounds where the Lions Club Rodeo Arena now stands. The stone wall with the "Alamo" facade at the main entrance was a project of the old Works Progress Administration.
