Argyle's done nothing but win from the get-go. It's in the water in that Argyle-Krum-Ponder circle.

Our boys are real good. I believe them to be the 2nd best ever at Argyle.

Our girls are so so. Sometimes they have a hard time making a basket. However they do play great defense.

Saw Argyle play recently. It'll be an interesting 3rd round match-up with them if we are able to get there. It could be just as good as the Roosevelt-Princeton game last year at Plano West in the 3rd round.

I love me some Ladycat basketball. Big test for us against Argyle Friday. Most picked us behind Argyle, Sanger, and Whitesboro for the 3 playoff spots. Most didn't know about the freshman we had joining the 5 returning seniors and the ability of our first year coach (who was a former National Champ at Baylor).

Is that went to Valley View for 11 years and transferred her senior year to Celina?

Well, I wasn't here then, but I do know she went to Valley View before Celina, so that's probably her. Jordan Davis. Her younger brother Seth was our QB in 06 and 07. She has really done a great job.

I believe the ability to technically clinch a playoff spot depends on district tiebreakers.

I think the following are pretty safe assumptions for tonight:

Celina over Prosper
Argyle over Whitesboro
Sanger over Gainesville

That would make the standings:

Argyle 7-0
Celina 6-1
Sanger 4-3
Whitesboro 3-4
Prosper 1-6
Gainesville 0-7

If all that happens it would still be possible for Celina, Sanger, and Whitesboro to end up in a three way tie for second with 6-4 records.

For that to happen:

Whitesboro would have to win out against Prosper, Celina, and Sanger
Celina would have to lose out against Gainesville, Whitesboro, and Argyle
Sanger would have to win against Argyle and Prosper and lose to Whitesboro

Celina would be 6-4 (2-0 vs Sanger, 1-1 vs Whitesboro)
Sanger would be 6-4 (0-2 vs Celina, 1-1 vs Whitesboro)
Whitesboro would be 6-4 (1-1 vs Celina, 1-1 vs Sanger)

I have no idea how that tiebreaker would be broken.

The good news is...

Everybody knows that should never come in to play!

Celina should beat Prosper tonight. Celina has Gainesville on Tuesday and I doubt a 61 point swing from the first game is likely!

I expect on February 10th that Argyle (9-0) will be facing Celina (8-1) with a share of 1st place on the line and that Sanger (5-4) will be facing Whitesboro (4-5) with 3rd place on the line.

You are correct. I am guilty of premature postseason planning, making the assumption that a Gainesville win would be a given for us. I wouldn't want our girls to have that mindset, so I shouldn't either.

Go ahead and make your plans! That win last night was huge! I wouldn't be surprised to see a slow start tonight but they will get the job done. I do not want to even consider what would have to take place to lose to Gainesville; sixty point wins just aren't flipped.

I understand and believe anyone familiar with the situation would as well. They did indeed play hard the whole way; they were simply outmatched.

Can't believe I'm going to miss the District Championship game. Nobody imagined we would only have 1 District loss with 1 game to play. It's been a great season so far. Really enjoying it.

For that matter, it's been a great YEAR so far. Volleyball playoffs for the first time in our history, state championship game in football for my son, and now basketball playoffs for the Ladycats. What in the world am I going to do for a life when they are out of high school? It's going by way too fast.

Well you know Argyle will have a crowd! The Celina fans have done a pretty good job of staying above your standard of 50 but as expected the away games have had significantly smaller crowds than the home games. Of course there hasn't been an away game of this importance. It will be interesting to see who shows up.

It was a good game tonight. I got there in the middle of the 2nd quarter. The girls hung tough until the final minute or so.

The bright side of not winning is that you won't have to play Roosevelt in the 3rd round. One of the assistants for Celina seemed relieved about that...lol.

You saw this game when it happened the first time. Only this time Celina wasn't able to force overtime. The overall flow/feel of the game was similar. Too many lapses on defense and some mental errors taking care of the ball on offense cost the Lady Cats tonight. The freshman's outside shots weren't falling. I know the girls are disappointed and that is understandable but they should all be very proud of their accomplishments so far. Heading into the season I don't think anyone gave them a chance to make the playoffs much less a chance to be playing for a district championship on the last night of the regular season. However, they should not be content with what they have accomplished so far. The season is not over and there is still work to be done. I believe they can make a run in the playoffs. Congratulations on an excellent season so far and good luck the rest of the way!

Somebody might want to let Kaufman know who they are playing!

DMN (http://www.hsgametime.com/dfw/schoolinfo.htm?propertyId=dfw&schoolId=954&infoType=schedule&sportId=7) has Kaufman playing Madison.

Kaufman's website (http://www.kaufmanlions.com/announcement.html) also has them playing Madison.

DMN (http://www.hsgametime.com/dfw/schoolinfo.htm?propertyId=dfw&schoolId=799&infoType=schedule&sportId=7) has Lake Worth playing Kennedale.

I'm not sure what the final standings for D11 were as neither the DMN or FWST has complete standings.

I know Roosevelt is first and I thought Ranchview should be second and Madison third.

Maybe JR knows how things turned out.

Paris was beaten by a lot of teams early in the season. We had an awful record heading into district but then they seemed to gel. I think because we're so young it just took time but I know we will probably exit the playoffs early.

It is impossible for me to accurately remember a score more than 30 seconds after a game. Unfortunately that is no exaggeration! I wish it was. My short term memory really seems to be slipping in my old age!

Sherman is big enough that I can't imagine it being full. Also several good eating places around Sherman..LOL

Geenville would be about half way for both teams. Howe is 75 miles from Paris and like 25 from Celina. Greenville is about 60 for each team.

Cardiac Celina survives Crandall rally
BY BILL SPINKS
HERALD DEMOCRAT

PLANO — Celina basketball playoff games — or at least their endings — are certainly not for the faint-hearted.

For the second time this week, the Lady Bobcats almost let a huge lead evaporate before their eyes. But once again, they found enough gas in the tank Friday night to nurse home a winner, 56-51, over Crandall in the Class 3A Region II area round at Plano West Senior High School.

It wasn’t until senior Allegra Nigh’s free throw with 19.5 seconds left, followed by Nigh’s rebound of a desperation miss, that an almost-packed and extremely-vocal Celina grandstand could finally relax a little.

“It was a little too exciting,” said Lady Cat head coach Jordan Davis. “We had a pretty good first half, but a good team like that isn’t going to quit fighting. They made several runs, and we got a few points here and there to kind of stop it. I’ll be surprised if I still have a voice tomorrow.”

The game was almost a carbon copy of the Lady Cats’ 42-36 bi-district win over Commerce on Tuesday, during which Celina grabbed a huge first-half lead only to find itself in a second-half battle to the finish.

“We have had a problem with that lately,” said Celina senior Madison Glendenning. “We’ve had such great first halves, and our goal is to get a better second half. We’ve been struggling at that, but we always end up pulling it out.”

The Lady Cats (23-9), in their first postseason run since making it to the 2A Region II tournament in 2005, will take on 10-3A champion Paris on Tuesday in the Region II quarterfinals. The site will probably be determined Saturday, Davis said, most likely somewhere in the Sherman-McKinney corridor.

Playing with a poise that belies her 14 years of age, freshman guard MacKynzie Newman finished with 21 points, seven rebounds and five steals, all team highs.

“I’m one of the starting five, and all the other freshmen sort of look up to me,” Newman said. “But I’m up to it.”

Backcourt mate Kyla Hutson added 11 points, and another guard, Amy Thiel, chipped in with nine tallies on three 3-point baskets for Celina.

Junior swing player Emily Atkins led Crandall with 18 points and seven rebounds. The Lady Cats were able to keep Atkins bucketless in the second half, though she made 8-of-10 from the charity stripe.

Early on, the Lady Cats were lights-out from the perimeter. They made 6-of-10 from beyond the arc in the first half, and their full-court press was effective in building what seemed to be an insurmountable 40-19 halftime advantage.

That changed quickly in the second half as Crandall (19-13) rained a fusillade of 3-pointers in the third quarter. Thiel’s trey from the right wing early in the stanza bumped the margin back to 21 before the bottom fell out for Celina.

First, it was back-to-back triples by Crandall’s Malloriee Newton that trimmed the deficit quickly to 14. Then Kacie Byford nailed one, and Emily Kirk hit from outside near the end of the quarter to bring the Lady Pirates to within 48-36.

The comeback continued in the fourth as the Lady Pirates scored six straight to close within 52-48 with 3:13 left.

But the Lady Cats, despite not making a field goal in the final eight minutes, spread the floor at that point and was 8-of-12 from the foul line down the stretch to keep Crandall — barely — at arm’s length.

“Good teams aren’t going to go away,” Davis said. “There’s not going to be a team you face now that’s gonna go away if you get them down early. We just have to keep pushing, keep trying to do what we do, and not get complacent. That’s kind of what happened. What we were doing was working, and then our shots stopped falling. We’ve got to figure out another way to create some shots.”

The Lady Cats were able to feed off a huge crowd of more than a thousand supporters that filled the visitors’ side, including a large and rowdy student section.

“The crowd was amazing,” Davis said. “That student section was great. I can’t thank them enough. I just hope we keep getting that kind of support.”

Huge gym but I don't really like it from a fan's view. You're too far away from the court.

I was looking for pics earlier but could hardly find a mention of athletics on their website.

Have you ever been to Coppell's gym?

No, I've never been to Coppell's. Our boys played a warm up game last year and also yesterday in Royce City. Why anyone built a gym like that for high school I'll never understand. The closest seat to the court is probably 25 foot from the court and at least 10 foot above the court. The top row is like being at a college game

I don't like the gym at Royse City either, they built it with the first row too high off the floor for my likings. Nice facility could have been designed better, I guess it keeps the crowd away from the players...
