ARANSAS PASS — The West Oso boys basketball team has made four trips to the state tournament in the past 10 years, and almost exclusively, the Bears have taken the bus to Austin on the strength of undersized, quick athletes.

The 2009 version of West Oso, though, has plenty of brawn to go with that undersized quickness.

West Oso overpowered Aransas Pass 86-74 Tuesday in the first meeting of the season for the District 31-3A superpowers.

West Oso's big men dominated the boards, outrebounding Aransas Pass 42-20. The Panthers, who have made four state trips in the past seven years, had no answer for the Bears' tandem of Paul Woods and Raymond Robinson.

The 6-foot-5 Woods had 30 points and 13 rebounds. Sixteen of Woods' points came off easy putbacks after grabbing an offensive rebound.

Robinson -- a 6-1 sophomore, who plays the small forward spot -- had 26 points and 10 rebounds.

Xavier Johnson, another 6-5 post player, came off the bench with 12 points and six rebounds.

"We knew we had a big size advantage, and before the game we talked about getting the ball inside," West Oso coach Arnold Flores said. "We want to get the ball inside to Paul when we can, but our sophomore Raymond Robinson also had a big night, and Xavier Johnson stepped up, too."

Although Aransas Pass (15-14 overall, 5-1 District 31-3A) lost by double digits, the Panthers actually gave West Oso (19-4, 6-0) its stiffest test in district play so far. The Bears, ranked No. 6 in the state by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches, cruised through their first five district games with a 32-point average margin of victory. Orange Grove, which lost by 16 last week, is the only other district foe to come closer than 28 points of the Bears. West Oso wraps up the first round of district play against Sinton on Friday.

"We always have tough games against Aransas Pass, and this time was no exception," Flores said. "We know to get to the district championship, we have to get past Aransas Pass and Orange Grove."

West Oso had its hands full with the Panthers. Especially tough to get a handle on was lightning bug point guard G.A. Hill, who led Aransas Pass with 27 points, including five 3-pointers.

The 3-pointer looked like it might be the secret to the Panthers' success against the Bears, as they drilled seven in the game's opening 10 minutes to take an early 26-23 lead. At that point, Aransas Pass' only other points had come on three free throws and a conventional basket by Jacolby Williams.

West Oso eventually grabbed the lead for good midway through the second period. Aransas Pass chipped the lead down to five late in the third quarter, but the Bears closed that quarter on a 7-0 run to take a 65-53 edge into the final period. West Oso opened that lead up to as much as 18 points in the fourth before winning by 12.

The game got a little heated midway through the third quarter when a couple of players got into a brief shoving match. Referees and teammates quickly separated the individuals, and security guards even stepped on the floor to make sure things didn't escalate.

"It was an intense game," Robinson said. "(It's always like that) because Aransas Pass is good, first of all. And, their press is strong, so it makes you kind of nervous, because you know if you mess up, they're going to get a layup. You've just got to keep your composure out there."
