**DO NOT TURN THIS INTO A POLITICAL THREAD**

President Bush will be in Midland sometime this afternoon for his farewell speech.

I had to detour about 3 times to get to my office this morning, because of all the barricades. I have always "thought" I worked downtown.

Come to find out, my office building is 2 blocks North of downtown, so we are far enough away that we aren't one of the buildings that doesn't have to adhere to the "mandatory evacuation" at 1:00 today.

That stinks....I really would like half a day off.

Mandatory evacuation? Just because someone famous is coming to town?

Presidents travel and make speeches all the time. I've never heard of a mandatory evacuation of the area just because he's going to be giving a speech.

Surely you are familiar with the buiding fire alarms. That and a lighter held near a building sprinkler will get you at least a half day off!

Of course there is always the anonymous bomb threat, too.

How about an anonymous email asking if your building has a clear line of sight to the area in which the ex-president will speak?

Lastly, there is always the request to your boss that you be allowed to hear the ex-president speak in person. You then declare that you are unable to return to work due to the crowds. I'm sure George W. can draw a great crowd in Midland! This last suggestion is the least likely to succeed. :D

He won't even be here until 4:00...probably wont even make it downtown until 5:00. My brother and sister-in-law are already heading downtown to wait in line for the gates to open up at 1:00. They are expecting 25,000+ people crammed downtown. I think I heard Lee Greenwood, Rodney Atkins and the Gatlin Brothers will be here entertaining the crowds while waiting.

The first three can be performed shortly after you get to work or just before noon.

As I said, the last one is least likely to be successful.

That may be one downfall of working at the same place for long.

They know me well enough to know that I absolutely DETEST crowds.....so, my going to football games has always kinda surprised them!!:p

Plus....if I was to set off an alarm on something, I would get caught....I don't hide my guilt very well!:p

I DETEST crowds too and the way I justify being able to "stand" football games or any sporting event is that it is OUTSIDE & I can breathe and see sky and don't feel "enclosed". :nerd: :crazy1: ;)

That's my story & I'm sticking to it!

This event IS being held outside...but at a sporting event I am usually sitting between people I know, so I don't feel so crowded.

Me and Hubby went to a Tech game the year we got married. I was sitting by a burly sweaty guy who STUNK! Poor Jimmy, I was practically on top of him whether we were sitting down or standing up...just to get some space.

So is his plane flying directley from DC to Midland? I understand it is one of the Air Force 1 fleet of jets, but just not THE Air Force 1. That would be cool to see.

He is flying in the same Presidential Plane that he always flew in. The name of it just changed to Special Air Mission 28000 instead of Air Force One because Bush will no longer be president.

I used to see him fly in front of my house when he was landing at TSTC in Waco. It was cool to see. I drove through their one day when he was in town, and their were 2 planes there, both Air Force 1. When he would come in and fly out to Crawford it was crazy, with helicopters circling everywhere, cops, Secret Service and everything.

We had a former President and his wife (who also ran) visit my previous office several times. We never had evacuation, but we did have lock-in/out every time. The Secret Service dudes are always friendly.

Before 9/11, "W" used to play golf at Ridgewood CC in Waco. If you were on the coarse when he showed, you continued to play. Also when he flew into TSTC and the weather was bad he traveled by motorcade right through China Spring. Flies over the house all the time. Pretty cool.

Also have run into Mrs. Bush at the Home Depot in Waco AND at the Grand Canyon in Arizona.

Also have pictures of my sons standing next to Air Force One when you could actually walk around it (within 20 yards of it) before 9/11.

We even got to sit in Marine One. VERY WAY COOL!

The best part of the 8 years were the cool airshows. There is a no fly zone around the Ranch. They usually have a F-15s, F-16s F-18's or F-22's that were either at Carswell or Fort Hood. When a stray 152 or 172 ventures into the area , the fighters come screaming in and escort the vagrant by either circling or tail walking to Waco Regional where they are met my the Blackhawks with Secret Service guys. Seen it happen lots of times and it never gets boring!

It was crazy, we had binoculars at my office and could see the snipers on some of the buildings.

Air Force One..or whatever it's called now circled over downtown twice before landing at the airport....it was pretty awesome to see!!
