BRECKENRIDGE — Another second-half collapse turned into a heroic late comeback for the Sweetwater boys basketball team on Friday. The Mustangs, after seeing a 10-point lead (26-16) at halftime turn into a five-point deficit (35-40) after three quarters, rallied to force over-time and eventually pulled out a 61-52 win over Breckenridge in the team’s District 2-3A opener.
The Bucks took their first lead, 35-32, on three free throws by David Howard and held two five-point leads before Sweetwater caught fire behind the shooting of Zach Birdwell, who scored his team’s last nine points in regulation to force the overtime with the teams deadlocked at 48.
In the extra period, Birdwell was just as dead-ly, scoring 11 of Sweetwater’s 13 points as the Mustangs (8-15 overall) pulled out the victory. The 6-3 senior finished with 28 points in all. Birdwell, who hit two 3-pointers and made 14 of 20 free throws, including six in overtime, was the only player in double figures for Sweetwater although six other players had points in the game.
Tres Campbell and Jason Vause each scored eight points and Steven Fields seven, while Jacob Blueford had five, Ken-neth Norman three and Dane Bennett two.
Sweetwater led 16-12 after one quarter, then outscored Breckenridge 10-4 in the second period.
Sweetwater will try to go 2-0 in district when it returns home Tuesday to face Graham in a 7:30 p.m. contest.

We heard, we just did not care.. Early beat both Sweetwater and Snyder in the Brownwood Tournament and thats was Early's 3rd and 4th win of the year. Now they are 1-2 in their 2A distrist. I would take that win against Breck and keep talking about it as long as I could if I were you.
