Griner is averaging 27.1 points, 12.6 rebounds and 9.4 blocks per game and shooting 68.9 percent for the state’s top-ranked Class 5A team.

glad she is coming to baylor....

there have been women that were 6'8" in the past that couldnt dunk emerson...actually plenty of them in college basketball now....its not just the fact that she can dunk that is impressive, its the fact that she can throw it down like a man....there is really no holding ur breath hoping she is gonna make it over the rim like a lot of hte female dunkers now.....

I don't believe that any person physically capable of playing basket could be 6'8" and not be able to dunk. I am 6'2" with absolutely NO hops and can get the ball in + some rim.

This is a dubious statement. Just do a little basic math factoring in your height, approximate reach, a 10' goal, clearance needed above the rim, and any 6'2" person that can dunk (or come close) would need at least a 30" or greater vertical leap, which I would guess is above average.

Am I mistaken?

its a girl...they arent built the same as men, there is a reason its very uncommon for a woman to dunk.....if it was as common as you are saying then the chronicle wouldnt be writing a story about it...jsut a couple years ago that girl at tennessee became the first woman to dunk in a college game...

Rim = 120 inches
My reach up = 98 inches
Add in 1 inch for shoes

Vertical reach = 99 inches

Would only need a 21 inch vertical to get rim

The question that I have is can you dunk from a standing position below the basket? This girl can and does it very easily. She made a two handed dunk from the side of the box from a standing start and had room to spare. That is impressive for a 6'8" man---much less an 18 year old girl. She is really an unbelievable athlete also. Passes well, runs the floor well, and can play super defense.

The size of someone's hands would factor in the ability to dunk a regulation basketball. Isn't the girl's basketball smaller in diameter?

I'm very sure that if Yao Ming was 6'8", he wouldn't be able to dunk. He can barely get his feet off the ground.

Sounds like you have very long arms. Still you need to add 6-7 inches to get the ball above the rim, which puts us pretty close to my original 30" vertical leap requirement. Less if your knuckles drag the ground.

Do they seriously have male/female basketballs? I guess either I learned something new today, OR every school I attended was too poor to get us our own. (Or both)

Yep. The female ball is 28.5" male ball is 29.5". The one inch makes a big difference though.

the women's ball most guys can palm, even w/ small hands and its lighter so it adds a good 5 feet to your range....however, when u first start shooting w/ it you shoot everything long and once u hone in with it, but when u switch back to a men's ball u airball a lot til u get used to it again...
