Agree with this list, esp Roy Clark since he's a relative of mine. I'd also add Eddie Van Halen as one of the best.

This might surprise ya'll. It did me. But, I saw an interview with
Eric Clapton. He proclaimed Prince as one of the greatest
guitarists of all time.

Btw...Angus Young, Billy Gibbons, and Ronnie Van Zandt deserve
to be mentioned.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Glenn Campbell. I dont know about now, but in his hay day he was one of the very best. I saw him with Chet Adkins and Roy Clark one time. He easily held his own with two of the all time greats.

Maybe we should mention the guy that taught Eric Clapton and Jimmy Paige how to play lead guitar. That would be Jeff Beck. I've heard a LOT of guitar players in my 61 years, but none better than him.

While Beck is one of the best, I would not say he taught them to play seeing as Clapton was with the Yardbirds before Beck

Delaney Bramlett is who is known as the man who taught Clapton and btw George Harrison

speaking of Bramlett..he just passed away on the 27th of Dec

but ur right he is awesome

I'll take your word for who got there first. Clapton played rythym with the Yardbirds. He got very good after they broke up. Beck went on as a soloist. I used to have a record that had him playing an "Old Man River" lead on a bass guitar. It was awesome. He is definitely the foremost English guitarist.

My favorite American guitarist is John Fogerty. ANYBODY who could make a Kustom guitar amp sound good has to be pretty talented. He was the best I ever heard at doing that.

I think Jeff Healey "was" pretty good, too. He died last year. R.I.P. Jeff.

And yes, I like Peter Frampton, too, piratebg. He uses a voice synthesizer better than anyone I've ever heard. Very talented.

My opinion on great guitar players.

It's not how well you play, but what's in your head when you play. You can spend hours watching youtube videos of fifteen year old kids in their bedroom tearing it up now a days.

For example, Stevie Ray Vaughn is considered one of the greats, but there are a hundred thousand fifteen year olds that can play his songs.

What makes a great guitar player in my book? Well I would have to say when I can tell who is playing by only hearing the guitar track, not the song.

Here are a few of the guys I think have their own unique sound. In no particular order.

Billy Gibbons
Eddie Van Halen
David Gilmore
Brad Paisley
Brent Mason
Mark Knopler
Jimmy O'lander
