Texas A&M had finished the regular 1939 college football season at 10-0 and Tulane had finished at 8-0-1 with their only tie with and 8-1-1 North Carolina team at 14 all. The two teams met in the 1940 Sugar Bowl. The polls at that time concluded with the regular season and the Aggies were voted the National Champions in college football while Tulane was ranked at No. 5. Tulane was really the home team since the game was in their stadium and it was a good game.
Texas A&M scored first in the first quarter when JIm Kimbrough scored with a 1 yard td run. This score held up until half time at 7 - 0. In the third quarter Tulane's Kellogg returned a punt for a td that tied it at 7 - 7. In the 4th Quarter Tulane took the lead when Monnett Butler scored on a one yard run to make it 13 to 7. The extra point was blocked and this was the critical play of the game. Remember they didn't have 2 point conversions then and only the offensive team could score. Later in the fourth Jim Kimbrough (who had 159 yards in 25 carries) scored his second td to tie the game at 13 all. The Aggies made their extra point to make it 14 to 13 and this was the final score.

This game was well played by two great teams and it was a great conclusion to the Aggies great NC perfect season.

You have to also remember that the Aggies won two straight bowl games in those years. The 1940 Aggie team also had a very good 9-1 record which included a 13 - 12 win over Fordham in the Cotton Bowl. In 1941 the Aggies had another good 9 - 2 season losing to Alabama in the Cottown Bowl 29 - 21.

Overall the Aggies from 1939 to 1941 won 29 games and lost 3. Not bad at all.
