Recycle your Christmas trees. Real Christmas trees are a pain for garbage collectors and should not be mixed with your regular household trash. Most communities have tree recycling programs for real trees. Check with your local Sanitation Department or Department of Public Works for places and times that you can recycle your tree. Trees should be free from decorations, lights and tree stands. Flocked trees are generally okay, as the flocking on today’s trees is made of latex.
Some uses for recycled Christmas Trees include:
1. Fish habitat in ponds and lakes, 60 to 80 percent of Brownwood trees are used in this manner.
2. Chipped into mulch and used to prevent soil erosion.
3. Chips can be placed in small cloth bags and used as air freshener.
